Experts - Human rights

A large number of unremunerated United Nations expert positions established by the United Nations Human Rights Council will be available during 2014. Individuals seeking appointment should have extensive and internationally recognized professional experience and expertise in the field of human rights with an emphasis the particular human rights issue to which the position relates. Experts, known as special procedures mandate holders report to the Human Rights Council – the main United Nations intergovernmental body dealing with human rights. Former and current experts include judges, university professors and human rights lawyers.

In 2014 the Human Rights Council will appoint up to 27 experts with extensive professional experience and expertise in human rights to serve as special procedures mandate holders. Appointed experts are not United Nations staff members do not receive any financial compensation apart from allowances when they travel officially.

Experts serve in their independent and personal capacity.  The work involved requires substantial time commitment, approximately a total of three months per year. Their activities  include: undertaking country visits, acting on individual cases and issues, conducting studies, and advocacy activities. All report annually to the Human Rights Council and most to the General Assembly. The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights provides substantive and technical support to these experts.
