JOB DESIGNATION: Sign language Interpreter / Admin support
JOB CATEGORY: Category IV
LOCATION: CBM East Africa Regional Office (AFE)
I. PURPOSE:
The purpose of this position is to provide Sign Language interpretation services as required in the Region and administrative support to the Regional Programme Manager (RPM) for East Africa.
II. STRUCTURE OF AUTHORITY:
The incumbent will report to the Regional Programme Manager for East Africa.
III. MANDATED AIMS:
Working in the Regional Office – Nairobi, the Sign language Interpreter / Admin support will be responsible for:
• Sign Language interpretation services as required at the Regional Office - facilitating communication between hearing persons and persons with hearing impairment. • Supporting the RPM in administrative, programme implementation and monitoring issues. • Research/ desk review of specified topics for AFE programme team.
III. CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide effective, accurate and impartial Sign Language interpretation for staff.
• Serve as a resource to RO Staff requiring Sign Language interpretation when working with partners and other stakeholders;
• Provide assistance to the Sign Language Trainers/Facilitators in the Sign Language training for staff; • Monitoring and follow-up of processes, projects and activities as assigned by the RPM; • Preparation of travel, accommodation and travel expense reports for the RPM; • Carrying out specific projects as requested by the RPM; • Ensuring presentation of timely internal office reporting to the RPM; • Carrying out research / desk review of specified topics for AFE programme team upon request;

IV. ADDITIONAL / STRETCH DUTIES:
In addition to the responsibilities outlined in section III above, the Sign Language Interpreter / Admin support will upon instruction by the RPM perform ad hoc activities which are either by their nature related to his / her normal duties or evolve from programme requirements.
V. QUALIFICATIONS: • Professional Interpreter certificate for Kenyan Sign Language. 2 years work experience in similar field, particularly with international NGO preferred. • Project management knowledge an advantage • Diploma in a related field, such as, Business Management, Administration, Disability and Development, Community Development.
VI. COMPETENCIES AND SKILLS:
• Discretion, confidentiality and diplomacy; • Strong voicing skills and communication flexibility to fit the needs of individuals being served. • Knowledge of Deaf culture, interpretation and fluency in Kenyan Sign Language. • Computer literate, experience in Microsoft Packages: Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access. • Effective communication skills at all levels: verbal, written and signing. • Ability to integrate into a multi-cultural environment. • Ability and willingness to learn. • Able to work independently, and as member of a team. • Ability to travel 20% of the time.
