Director of Development

Poised to begin a new phase of global expansion, PILnet is seeking a dynamic Director of Development who will take the lead and deliver the resources needed to keep pace with our ambitious plans. The Director of Development reports to the Executive Director and is responsible for conceptualizing, implementing, and expanding on a comprehensive development program, with a chief focus on law firms, corporations, and individual donors. He or she is an integral member of PILnet’s senior leadership team, and partners with PILnet’s Board of Directors to systematically and effectively build the organization’s overall fundraising efforts. The Director of Development manages three full-time staff.
Overall Fundraising Strategy and Implementation
• Craft and direct the implementation of an annual plan to build PILnet’s donor base and pipeline of prospects
• Report regularly to the Executive Director and the Board on fundraising progress against stated goals;
• Work closely with the senior leadership team to align fundraising efforts with the organization’s overall strategic plan and organizational goals
• Set annual fundraising goals and track progress against them
• Assist in preparing budgets and forecasts related to all fundraising activities
• Ensure that the development infrastructure and systems, including the donor management system, are maintained and upgraded as needed
• Liaise with Board members to support their fundraising efforts
• Devise and manage cultivation and stewardship events, as needed, to create and/or deepen relationships with PILnet’s various funding constituencies and
• Devise and oversee written communications to the same end.
Law Firm/Corporate Fundraising
• Develop strategy for law firm/corporate fundraising campaign(s) in order to widen pool of law firm supporters and draw in corporate support
• Steward and increase gifts from law firms and corporations
• Oversee maintenance of cultivation and solicitation systems and activities and
• Support Executive Director in relationship-building with and outreach to law firms and corporations, including by serving as primary liaison to the Pro Bono Council (PILnet’s advisory body for pro bono) and directly participating in their cultivation and solicitation.
Individual Donors/Major Gifts
• Develop strategies for expanding PILnet’s nascent base of individual donors, including relationship-building activities for priority prospects
• Lead targeted research to identify individual prospects capable of giving $2500 and above
• Support Executive Director and directly participate in cultivating and soliciting all major donors
• Support Board members in cultivating and soliciting individuals with guidance and follow-up and
• Direct the annual appeal and the other elements of ongoing annual fund effort.
Board
• Produce regular fundraising reports for Board meetings
• Direct research to identify Board prospects
• Staff Board nominating committee
• Take responsibility for annual Board solicitation in collaboration with Board chair and
• Staff Board development committee.
Senior Management Activities
• Build and manage the Development Department
• Collaborate with the senior management team to maximize organizational and fundraising effectiveness and
• Participate in strategic planning to provide development perspective and to inform fundraising goals and targets.
Qualifications
• B.A. required, graduate degree highly desirable
• Minimum of ten years fundraising experience or similar skills exhibited in a professional role
• Demonstrated track record of outstanding success in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting donors
• Proven ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling and clear to potential donors
• Extensive experience developing solid working relationships with Board members and other high-level donors
• Superlative oral communications, writing, editing, strategic thinking, and leadership skills
• Strong interpersonal skills and a high comfort level with developing new relationships and soliciting gifts
• Ability to take initiative and manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
• A proven leader who develops, motivates, and manages a high-performing team; and
• Knowledge and understanding of international relations and human rights.
