Major Functions
The Smart Fishing Initiative’s goal to transform fisheries management necessitates regionally coordinated, precedent setting activities that collectively generate change at a global scale. A reform of Regional Fisheries Management Organizations (RFMOs), such as the Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC), for example, will send a powerful message to push for reform of all RFMOs. Similarly, SFI strategies to reform other RFMO’s, such as those in the Pacific, will push reform of the IOTC. Accordingly, the overarching role of this position is to assume responsibility for the successful planning and execution of the Indian Ocean fisheries strategy. The emphasis herein will be on the Western Indian Ocean region, in support of the Coastal East Africa Marine Strategy (which is an integrated part of the Indian Ocean Tuna Strategy), working closely with the Coastal East Africa / Madagascar & Western Indian Ocean Programme Office (MWIOPO) Marine Team. The position will make a crucial contribution toward delivery of the SFI’s global goals and objectives.
