Position Overview:
The General Board of Global Ministries is the global mission agency of The United Methodist Church. It has personnel, projects, and partners in 136 countries and incorporates the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and the Advance for Christ and His Church, the denomination’s designated mission giving channel. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is the not-for-profit global humanitarian aid agency of the United Methodist Church. UMCOR is working in more than 80 countries worldwide.
The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is seeking a Grants Manager who will support the organization and its grantees by maintaining the organization’s online grants portal system, and through providing capacity strengthening for grants management, training and strategic guidance. This person will report to the Assistant General Secretary of UMCOR.
This is a varied position that involves maintaining the day-to-day business of the mission through working with staff across all units of the organization as well as a broad network of global partners. This position involves some travel, at times to insecure environments.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Duties include but are not limited to:
Grants Management
- Manage and maintain online grants portal system
- Receive and conduct initial screen potential new partners and grant applications
- Facilitate grant review and approval process with unit executives
- Oversee grant disbursements
- Ensure timely receipt and review of grantee reports.
- Evaluate program and project management methods as dictated by grant agreements and support UMCOR staff in ongoing monitoring and management of grants.
- Lead the Phase II Process of the overall Grants Portal Design, which will have a particular focus on providing multi-lingual access to the portal and a stronger Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) system.
Capacity Strengthening
- Develop and facilitate capacity-strengthening opportunities for grantees on all aspects of grants management (including grant applications, budget management, reporting, etc.).
- Work closely with UMCOR business- and proposal-development executives to develop and promote best practices among staff in grants management.
- Provide grants management support and guidance to UMCOR partner agencies globally. Increase the capacity of partners worldwide to prepare, manage grants, and produce accurate reports.
- Develop and implement new tools for continuous improvement and effectiveness of grants management.
Monitoring and Evaluation
- Work closely with UMCOR staff and unit heads to monitor and evaluate progress, strengthen capacity for grants management, and ensure transparency and accountability within UMCOR and partners;
- Conduct site visits to support and monitor partners as appropriate.
Strategic Partnerships and Guidance
- Liaise with Methodist-related institutions; NGOs, FBO’s, and CBO’s; government and multi-lateral institutions and donors; ACT Alliance members
- Participation in relevant meetings, including UMCOR Strategic Resource Team, which is responsible for ensuring that UMCOR’s resources, programs and partners support the organization’s core mission and strategic priorities
- Develop and implement new strategies for continuous improvement and effectiveness of grants management.
- Up to 30% travel required
QUALIFIED CANDIDATES WILL POSSESS THE FOLLOWING SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Strong and diverse experience in the humanitarian relief and development sector desired.
- Strong skills in negotiation, coordination, project management, communication, and reporting;
- Good interpersonal skills, diplomacy and patience;
- Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills essential;
- Ability to synthesize and communicate complex information;
- Ability to be flexible in fast-paced environment;
- Work independently with minimal supervision;
- Ability to communicate well in a variety of settings to function in a diverse workforce;
- Understand and respect the cultural, religious, and political environment and use diplomacy when working with the staff and local partners; and
- Willingness to travel up to 30% of time.
EDUCATION:
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent required. MA preferred.
- Degree in International Development, International Relations, International Health, Humanitarian Assistance, Global Health, or related field desired
EXPERIENCE:
- Must have at least three (3) to five (5) years relevant experience in non-profit, grants management, or related field
- Proficient knowledge of relief and development, ability to coordinate projects and grants management
- Computer proficiency in Windows environment and grants management database systems appropriate to position.
- Keen understanding of project cycle management
- Experience using monitoring and evaluation frameworks
- Development and facilitation of capacity strengthening and training programs
- Knowledge of or experience working with institutional donors, such as but not limited to U.S. government (USAID, DOS, etc.), UN agencies, DFID, EU and Global Fund a plus
- Experience living or working overseas a plus
- Experience working with a faith-based organization a plus
- Fluency in a language in addition to English highly desired, French or Spanish preferred
