The Global Fund was created to finance a dramatic turn-around in the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. These diseases kill over 6 million people each year, and the numbers are growing. The Global Fund attracts, manages and disburses additional resources through new public-private partnership that will make a sustainable and significant contribution to the reduction of infections, illness and death, thereby mitigating the impact caused by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in countries in need, and contributing to poverty reduction as part of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).
In Southern Sudan, United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is a key partner to the Global Fund for the fight against AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) and is the United Nations (UN) agency assuming the role of Principal Recipient of GFATM grants in selected countries. In its role as Principal Recipient, UNDP is responsible for the financial and programmatic management of the GFATM grant as well as for the procurement of health and non-health products in this grant.
Since 2010 UNDP has signed and started the implementation of the GFATM Round 9 Health system Strengthening (HSS) Grant. One of the key activities under the grant is to strengthen the national pharmaceutical supply chain management system to ensure safe and effective use medicine for improved health standards. A review of the pharmaceutical sector reveals serious capacity gaps in medicine procurement, storage, and distribution in South Sudan.
