Position: Consultant for Agricultural Engineer for installing irrigation System
Location: Dodoma, Tanzania
Project Objective:
To assist vulnerable communities with limited access to food, difficulties in rebuilding their basic natural resources base and essential physical infrastructure to have enhanced access to food and enable households to receive full benefits of development opportunities. The Project will also help the communities to enhance resilience against climate change and increase partnership opportunities.
Project Background:
The Saemaul Zero Hunger Communities project is a World Food Programme pilot project implemented by Good Neighbours International and regional government authorities, and funded by the Government of the Republic of Korea. The project has started its implementation in Chamwino District (Fufu, Suli and Chiboli villages), Dodoma region, Tanzania in May 2014.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Planning, designing, and overseeing construction of irrigation system for two sesame block farms in Suli and Chiboli (100 acre each).
• Directs, subordinate supervisors on constructions of such irrigation systems such as canals, and ditches according to type of soil, climatic characteristics, water supply, return flow, and other factors affecting irrigation requirements.
• Supervise contractor bidding along with the local government agricultural department and GNTZ staffs in charge.
• Supervising the hired contractor to deliver the results according to specifications, drawings requirements and Bill of Quantities by collaborating with District Irrigation Engineers.
• Conducts research on problems of soil drainage and conservation, applying knowledge of civil engineering.
• Create regular written reports in English and share with stakeholders.
• Monitor the result of the irrigation system installation after the completion of work.
Skills and Experience:
• In-depth knowledge of various irrigation systems
• In-depth knowledge in civil engineering
• Accumulated field experiences on construction of irrigation systems and civil engineering in the most rural areas of Tanzania (more than 5 years)
• Ability to manage the activity within the given timeframe
• Ability to manage finances within the given activity budget
• Ability to work on deadlines/ targets independently and within the existing team of people.
• Ability to display his/her progress and work done using a computer in a word document.
Qualification
• A bachelor’s degree in Agricultural engineering or Civil engineering.
• A master’s degree in Agricultural engineering or Civil engineering.
• Knowledge of CAD applications.
• An excellent written and oral command of English.
• Fluent in spoken and written English and Kiswahili.
• Excellent skills in use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Ability to work in an international and multi-national environment.
• Religious and cultural tolerance.
• Interest in community and rural development.
• Commitment to abide by Good Neighbours Tanzania Staff Terms and Regulations.
• Ability and willingness to reside in Dodoma for four (4) months.
• Ability and willingness to travel to project sites frequently and sometime sleeping in project sites, and able to visit Dodoma the next three month.
Contract Period:
The Project Contract will be for a period of 4 months, based in Dodoma region, Tanzania, with frequent visits to the project site (Suli and Chiboli villages in Chamwino District).
