The East African Community (EAC) is a regional intergovernmental organization comprising the Republic of Burundi, the Republic of Kenya, the Republic of Rwanda, the United Republic of Tanzania, and the Republic of Uganda with its headquarters in Arusha, Tanzania.
The EAC mission is to widen and deepen economic, political, social and cultural integration to improve the quality of life of the people of East Africa through increased competitiveness, value added production, trade and investments.
Applications are invited from highly motivated and result-driven professionals who are citizens of East African Community Partner States (Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda) to apply for the following positions tenable at the East African Community-Secretariat, in accordance with the availability of Quota Points per Partner State.

Job reports to: The Counsel to the East African Community
Job Purpose:
To provide legal advice to the Community as well as rendering other legal services.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for EAC Programme on Approximation of National Laws in the East African Community context;
- Facilitation of research and articulation of regional best practices in Harmonization of National Laws;
- Responsible for coordination of the EAC Regional Judicial Education/Training Programme;
- Draft and review agreements, contracts and other legal documents ensuring consistency with Community Mandate;
- Representation of the Community in legal disputes in the East African Court of Justice, other Courts of Judicature and other fora; and
- Drafting legal instruments, reviewing and negotiating tripartite Protocols, Agreements, MOUs, funding and grant agreements
Qualifications and Experience:
A Master’s Degree in Law from a reputable university, with a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice, or a certificate of enrolment on the Bar or a diploma to practice law in the respective Partner State.
A minimum of ten (10) years relevant experience at national/international level.
Skills and Competencies:
Excellent Communication and leadership skills;
Highly developed negotiation and interpersonal skills;
Effective legal research and report writing skills;
High level commitment to the legal profession and professional development;
Adequate computer skills.
Education Qualifications and Relevant Working Experience:
Education Qualifications:
All candidates applying must have qualifications that are recognized by the relevant national accreditation body in their respective countries. This condition is applicable for locally and internationally attained qualifications.
All professions that require registration with the specific professional bodies will be expected to do so in compliance with the requirements of their respective Partner States.
Relevant Working Experience:
Internship, training, apprenticeship and clerkship will not be considered as relevant work experience.
Eligibility:
Considering the current status of quota points per Partner State under East African Community Secretariat, only Applicants from the Republics of Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania are eligible to apply.
Terms and Conditions of Service:
This position is tenable for a contract of five (5) years renewable once and is subject to the application of the EAC Quota System.
