PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The Vice President sustainability Tanzania advises and supports the Senior Vice President sustainability CAR in developing a systemic view of Geita Gold Mine’s standing with regards to sustainability issues and charting an integrated course to optimise performance and secure the mine’s licence to operate.

DESCRITPTION OF THE ROLE
The Vice President Sustainability Tanzania supports the Senior Vice President sustainability CAR and the General Manager of the Geita Gold Mine with regards to all sustainability issues at the mine site (local) and in the capital city (national) levels.
The role is three fold, and includes the provision of :
- Direct Output support to the Senior Vice President sustainability CAR in developing and periodically updating the site’s sustainability strategy in order to deliver on the mine plan and meet CAR’s sustainability objectives and AGA’s values and standards.
- Direct Expert (DO) support to the Geita Gold Mine General Manager and his team, with regards to the implementation of the site’s sustainability strategy, in order to continuously improve sustainability performance and strengthen the mine’s social licence to operate.
- Direct Output support to the Senior Vice President sustainability CAR in developing an effective platform for the proactive management of all government relations, including with regards to tax and legal issues, in order to protect the business’ interests, resolve outstanding issues and bolster AGA’s standing amongst key stakeholders as the preferred gold mining operator in Tanzania.
The role starts with a focus on proactive management of sustainability-related issues and targeted analysis of trends, resulting in effective mitigation strategies/programs.
Consistent with the focus on maximizing capability, the Vice President Sustainability Tanzania must build and maintain a skilled and effective team of subordinates (if required) structured to support the mine in its efforts to achieve and sustain a competitive advantage.
From time to time, the Vice President sustainability Tanzania will be required to personally lead and manage specific projects in support of the mine site.
Key in the execution of this assignment is the use of available expertise within the Region and Corporate.
LONGEST TASK
Coordinate the implementation of the Tanzania (Geita) Sustainability Strategy by September 2016. Aligned with CAR’s sustainability strategy and AngloGold Ashanti’s policies and values with regards to sustainability, the Tanzania (Geita) Sustainability Strategy will seek to minimise the negative impacts of several issues which are currently affecting the mine’s performance, including land access and resettlement, illegal mining and processing, poor stakeholder engagement and taxation, mitigate any further risks that may emerge in coming years, and secure the mine’s licence to operate
Key milestones
- A personal plan to achieve this task is developed, with input from collateral team members, and submitted to SVP by end of December 2013. (the plan should include guidance on strategy; regulatory requirements; quality of resources to execute; controls to monitor and the expected system requirements)
- A site-specific stakeholder engagement strategy is developed in order to support the implementation of the Sustainability Strategy.
- A management and support system for implementation is designed by December 31st , 2013
- An external evaluation is conducted to assess the impact of the strategy on the minimization of issues and risks by December 31st , 2015
- As required, the strategy is adjusted and corrective actions are implemented by September 2016 such that remaining issues and risks are judged acceptable to the business and community (applying the risk ranking matrix process)

- Integrate and build upon best practices and lessons learned from other mines.
- Input and support from the Geita Gold Mine General Manager.
- Input and support from the SVP Sustainability (CAR)
- Resources
- The resources required to complete the execution plan will be proposed by the Vice President Sustainability. Subsequent requirements will be included in the yearly budgets.
- The resource plan in support of the execution must also take into account the cross-functional resources available to the Mine Site such that these are planned and used to the fullest.
- The resource plan will also draw upon the CARO sustainability team for support, as appropriate.
PLANNING AND BUDGET
- The development of the annual budget as part of an integrated plan.
- Manage, monitor and control the expenditure against budget and investigate methods to manage costs to ensure that funds are optimally utilised.
Preference will be given to applications from Tanzanian citizens
Desired Skills and Experience
QUALIFICATION
- Recognized tertiary qualification in a business related discipline or in social or political science.
EXPERIENCE
- 10 – 15 years relevant experience, dealing with NGO’s, government, implementing community development programs, etc. of which 5 years’ should have been at an Executive level.
Must have relevant knowledge of:
- Strategic and business open pit mine planning process and financial models
- Large open pit mining operations
- Ore processing
- HR practices and effective government relations
- Project management
- Communication and Change Management
- Community and Government liaison and negotiations to further the interest of the company
- Nature and impact of Mining Operations in a community, taking all aspects of environmental, security, occupational health and communication into account.
