The ICLEI Capacity Center is a division of the ICLEI World Secretariat which serves key organizational functions for the World Secretariat and the entire global organization and implements and/or manages projects within the World Secretariat.
We are offering a position as
Traineeship in Data Management
The successful candidate will be a part of the international ICLEI World Secretariat team based in Bonn, Germany and will be placed in the Knowledge Management team within the ICLEI Capacity Center, which is responsible for collecting, collating, analyzing and distributing various data.
Objectives of the traineeship:
- Learn how an international membership organization administers its global database systems with various computer programs, including, but not limited to MS Access 2010, MS Excel 2010 and MySQL Workbench 5.2.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Preparing, entering, verifying, and maintaining data in the global database system.
- Developing routines and good practice for ensuring collected data is kept up-to-date, balancing time/resource efficiency and effectiveness.
- Learn how to effectively query the database to meet organizational and project needs, as well as define routine reports required by various teams.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Generate standard and custom reports from databases.
- Prepare and execute mail merge functions from database to other software.
- Production, verification, and distribution of listings, labels, reports, and statistics.
- Learn how the various data tables are structured and interrelated in order to effectively capture and manage organizational data.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Structuring of and maintaining computerized databases.
- Creating and managing various project databases.
- Providing first level support to all staff using the databases.
- Learn about the importance of data quality.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Ensuring that the principles of validity and accuracy, completeness, consistency and uniformity apply to all data.
- Developing good practice for quality assurance geared toward ICLEI staff whose work includes capturing data which gets fed into the global database system.
- Learn about policies and regulations concerning data security.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Researching good practice in the field of data security.
- Ensuring security and confidentiality of sensitive data in the global database system.
- Learn about other systems used by the global organization to capture, share and exchange knowledge and information.
The final objective would be mastering the following tasks:
- Editing content and files on the organizational intranet.
- Researching tools and platforms that can be used to meet project and organizational needs for data collection, sharing and exchange.
Requirements:
• Strong data management and manipulation skills.
• Very good knowledge and experience with MS Access 2010 and MS Excel 2010. Knowledge of SQL and MySQL is advantageous.
• Demonstrated ability to learn new software.
• University degree (or equivalent) in Information Systems, Computer Sciences, Social Sciences, Statistics, GIS or a related field.
• Self-motivation, pro-active attitude, good interpersonal skills.
• Well organized, accurate and attentive to details. Take ownership of activities and responsibilities.
• Some experience with data management (either during university program or previous internship) is an advantage.
• Excellent command of English language (written and spoken), additional languages are an asset.
Terms and conditions:
The traineeship position is available immediately at the ICLEI World Secretariat in Bonn, Germany. The duration is planned for 12 months. The Data Management Trainee will be supervised by the Knowledge Management Officer.
ICLEI offers trainees a cost compensation of Euro 14.400 per year before tax and social insurance fees.
- Workings hours: 40/week, 2 days of paid leave per month.
- Working language: English.
- Due to legal requirements, applicants must be eligible to obtain an appropriate work permit for Germany prior to the start of the position.
