PATH's Vaccine Access and Delivery Global Program supports the integration of vaccines for public health impact and disease control in developing countries by focusing on activities that facilitate vaccine introduction and widespread use, such as determining disease burden, conducting clinical trials, establishing the health economics of vaccine use, raising awareness of disease burden and the impact of vaccination, increasing the availability of technologies through licensing and commercialization, and advocating for appropriate policies. In addition, the program implements activities that improve the accessibility of high-quality immunization services including training, supervision, health information systems, immunization safety, logistics and communication.
Vaccine Access and Delivery is currently recruiting for a Senior Strategic Communications Manager to support the PATH-hosted Vaccine Implementation Technical Assistance Consortium (VITAC). The Senior Strategic Communication Manager will lead VITAC efforts to develop and deliver innovative communication strategies that support the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI) Alliance mission to save children’s lives and protect people’s health by increasing access to immunization in poor countries.
VITAC partners include the GAVI Secretariat, WHO, UNICEF and a consortium of technical institutions, including Johns Hopkins University; the consortium is led by PATH and funded by GAVI. The primary goal of VITAC is to support strengthened routine immunization and the accelerated introduction and optimal implementation of new vaccines into the routine immunization programs of GAVI-eligible countries.
The Senior Strategic Communications Manager will report to the Director of Advocacy and Communications and will provide management and strategic oversight of the communications work of several PATH advocacy and communications staff across several locations.
Duties and responsibilities include:• Develop, implement and evaluate change-focused communication strategies in support of VITAC and GAVI objectives targeting multiple audiences including: GAVI Alliance organizations and partners; scientific audiences; donors; and country level immunization stakeholders
• Leadership and facilitation of communication planning processes including through the development of concept notes, backgrounders and conceptual frameworks
• Management of VITAC internal partner communications and the production of project summaries and updates
• Management of VITAC expert communication subcontractors including writers, journalists, photographers and videographers tasked with the generation of communication products and materials in support of GAVI and VITAC objectives
• Line management of at least one VITAC/PATH Communications officer and deputy cover for the VITAC A&C director for the PATH-led communications elements of the VITAC Advocacy & Communications portfolio
• The development of a VITAC framework to the monitoring and evaluation of the communications outputs of VITAC partners and subcontractors and the monitoring and evaluation of VITAC’s strategic communication efforts
• The development and execution of social media strategies to complement VITAC scientific and technical communications efforts
Required Skills
• Proven success developing, implementing and evaluating change-focused communication strategies to inform and/or influence health policies and program strengthening
• Proven success at networking, building relationships and managing partners, including government and multilateral organizations
• Proven success in commissioning and managing freelance writers, journalists and photographers
• Project report writing
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English
• Adept at navigating a complex team environment
• Proven facilitation skills; training skills desirable
• Willingness and ability to travel
Required Experience • Post graduate degree in journalism, communications, media relations, social sciences, public health, international development or a related field, or equivalent years of relevant industry experience
• Minimum of seven years of work experience in strategic change-focused communications in the health or development sectors
• Supervisory/management experience
• Experience working in print and/or on-line journalism with highly developed written and oral communication skills in English
• Experience in developing, implementing, monitoring and evaluating health communication strategies
• Familiarity with social media and other communication technologies - including experience in website development and content management
• Sound interpersonal and capacity building skills, ideally with experience in training, facilitation and mentoring
The position holder must have legal authority to work and reside in Switzerland.
