Accounting for International Development is a UK based social enterprise which helps charities across the developing world increase their financial management capacity through connecting with volunteer finance professionals.

AfID is currently working with a large local Malawian organisation, with both charitable and social enterprise initiatives. It was closely linked to a UK-based organisation; however, with the success of the social enterprises, it is moving closer to autonomy. That said, the UK-based organisation has concerns around the accounting/finance function. Despite being well-staffed, the team has been late in producing year-end accounts, they are not confident in their use of Sage, and responsibilities are not well-divided. Linked to this are concerns around a lack of transparency.

They are looking for an experienced accountant able to undertake a thorough organisational review with sensitivity including:

• Tighten their processes and controls/make them more transparent
• Train the finance staff in the use of Sage
• Assist with division of responsibilities and tasks
• Ensure reports are produced on time

There are 2 volunteering options:

1. Immediate: someone senior to undertake a thorough organisational review and offer them detailed recommendations (1 month, housing provided).
2. April: 6 months, as above, plus implementation of recommendations. Flights and accommodation would be provided.
