Applications are invited for the position of Professor of Urban Planning and Design at Xi’an Jiaotong - Liverpool University. The core expectations of a candidate for appointment to the Chair in Urban Planning and Design are: an international standing and profile within the relevant subject area of Urban Planning and Design and evidence that this standing and profile will continue to be developed and enhanced; distinguished academic leadership at an international level; considerable leadership and management experience, including effective use of resources; a capacity to make a significant contribution to the continued enhancement of the University’s reputation within the subject area; full engagement with the University’s strategies and policies, and evidence of a capability to contribute to the development of those strategies; and the capacity and willingness to assume major leadership roles, including Departmental headship within the University in the future. More generally, in order to succeed in a senior academic position in an international institution enjoying rapid expansion, candidates must be marked by flexibility, energy, commitment to collaboration, and an enthusiasm for the pace, dynamism and global ambition which characterise XJTLU.
Xi’an Jiaotong - Liverpool University (XJTLU) is a unique collaborative institution, the first and currently the only university in China to offer both UK and Chinese accredited undergraduate degrees. Formed in 2006, the first cohort of students graduated in August 2010. The university now has 5,000 students studying on campus. The language of instruction in Years 2 to 4 is English. XJTLU aims to become truly research-led, and has recently committed significant investment into research development and the expansion of PhD student numbers on campus. The Department of Urban Planning and Design aims to provide quality professional planning education to accommodate the demands of the rapidly developing economy and urbanization of China. The department currently offers an undergraduate degree programme in urban planning and design.
XJTLU is located in the Higher Education Town of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), 80km from Shanghai and connected by high speed rail and road links. SIP is a major growth zone, including operations run by nearly one-fifth of the Fortune 500 top global companies. It has experienced economic growth rates of over 30% for more than a decade. The broader Suzhou area encompasses the spirit of both old and new in China, with the historic old town a major World Heritage Site. Greater Suzhou is now the fourth largest concentration of economic activity in China in terms of GDP, and SIP offers a high quality of life.
The salary is negotiable and in addition, members of academic staff are entitled to accommodation and travel allowances, medical insurance, and relocation expenses. Overseas staff may receive a tax "holiday" of up to three years, depending on nationality and personal circumstances.
