SCOPE | | |
Provide a focal point for U-15 initiatives by coordinating the U15’s work, especially its collective engagements with the Government of Canada, but also relationships with national and international academic, business and civil society organizations. The Executive Director, working with U15 Executive Heads, will ensure the development and implementation of advocacy strategies for U15 priority objectives and a co-coordinated U15 voice on the issues. | |
CANDIDATE PROFILE | | |
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES- Build and maintain strong working relationships with the Executive Heads of the U-15 universities, their office staff, and government relations (GR) staff at each university;
- Build and maintain a close working relationship with key staff members at the AUCC;
- Develop effective working relationships with national associations of research-intensive universities in other countries;
- Establish and maintain effective communication with key officials in the Government of Canada;
- Working with Executive Heads, develop and implement advocacy strategies for the U-15, ensuring that meeting agendas and work plans for the U-15 cycle of meetings, and between-meeting activities, support these strategies;
- Organize and coordinate U-15 meetings in collaboration with the Executive Head serving as chair;
- Plan and coordinate meetings of U-15 Provosts, Vice-Presidents, GR staff or institutional planning staff to ensure alignment with objectives set out by the Executive Heads of the U-15;
- Prepare or commission short background briefings as required to allow for informed discussion at U-15 meetings;
- Survey emerging issues in higher education in Canada and in a select number of comparable jurisdictions (the USA, the UK, France, Australia, etc.), and draw relevant public policy to the attention of U-15 members;
- Set up and manage a small office (attached to a U-15 institutional member) consisting of the Executive Director and an administrative support person who will oversee the maintenance and management of records for the U-15 (including minutes), and, under the direction of the Executive Director, develop background briefs on key initiatives; and
- Supervise the U-15 Data Analyst/Coordinator, ensuring that the DE Analyst’s work is aligned with and supports U-15 priorities, as determined by the Executive Heads.
EXPERIENCE - Demonstrated record of success as a senior executive with strong leadership qualities within a relevant research-based institution (preferably within the area of academia);
- A deep understanding of and respect for the culture of research-intensive universities and a record of achievement through building and engaging partnerships;
- An extensive network within research-based organizations and beyond, coupled with an in-depth understanding of the role that both provincial and federal governments play in educational funding and specifically for research based, post-secondary institutions;
- Experience in building and maintaining relationships with all levels of decision makers;
- Experienced communicator and public presenter, adept at media relations;
- Proven abilities in human resources, financial and labour management; and
- Experience working and collaborating with a Board of Directors, ideally a volunteer Board.
