POSITION # 11-146–POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW/HARVESTPLUS
Job Summary
HarvestPlus, a challenge program of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), is co-convened by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT). It is an international, multi-disciplinary alliance, which seeks to breed and disseminate staple food crops rich in micronutrients as a promising means to reduce micronutrient malnutrition in developing countries. Current target micronutrient, crop and country combinations are: high-iron bean in Rwanda, high-iron pearl millet in India, high-provitamin A cassava in Nigeria and high-provitamin A maize in Zambia.
HarvestPlus is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow to join the Impact and Policy team. This position is based at IFPRI headquarters located in Washington, D.C. The position is a two-year, fixed-term appointment, and is renewable depending on performance and funding. Please note that Postdoctoral Fellow appointments at IFPRI have a maximum term of three (3) years, inclusive of any approved appointment extensions
Essential Duties
The Postdoctoral Fellow will mainly contribute to the impact component of the Impact and Policy team. Essential duties include:
• Work on the technology adoption studies
o Design survey instruments and sampling strategies
o Implement, supervise and monitor data collection efforts in study countries
o Use empirical micro-econometric modelling to investigate factors that affect farmers’ choice of certain technologies vis-à-vis others
• Work on the consumer acceptance studies
o Design various survey instruments (including experimental auctions and stated and revealed preference experiments) to capture consumers’ and producers’ acceptance of crops with visible and invisible traits
o Supervise and monitor the implementation of these survey instruments in study countries
o Use empirical micro-econometric modelling to estimate consumers’ and producers’ acceptance of and willingness to pay for crops with visible and invisible traits
• Work on the impact evaluation studies
o Assist in the design of randomised control trials for evaluation of the health and nutrition impacts of consumption of micronutrient rich staple crops
o Supervise and monitor the implementation of the impact evaluation studies
o Conduct empirical micro-econometric modelling to measure the impact of adoption and consumption of micronutrient rich staple crops on various health and other livelihood outcomes
• Participate in new projects and initiatives as needed.
Required Qualifications
• PhD in economics, agricultural economics or a related discipline.
• Excellent knowledge of applied econometrics
• Experience in undertaking quantitative research in developing countries, in particular analyzing household survey data
• Excellent interpersonal communication skills and writing ability
• Ability to work in diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
• Willingness and ability to travel
Preferred Qualifications
• Work experience in Africa or Asia
• Experience in designing survey instruments and collecting primary survey data
• Experience in supervising household surveys in developing countries
• Some knowledge of survey and sampling design
• Some knowledge of technology adoption literature
• Some knowledge of the literature on experimental auctions, stated and revealed preference methods
• Some knowledge of impact evaluation methods
