Org. Setting and Reporting
The post is located in the Office of the Prosecutor (OTP) Appeals and Legal Advisory Division (ALAD). The incubent will work under the direction of a Senior Appeals Counsel and the general supervisionof the Chief of ALAD.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of a Senior Appeals Counsel, the incumbent shall;
- Review and analyze final judgments and interlocutory decisions of Trial Chambers and provide advice on the advisability of appeal and identify grounds of appeal;
- Draft notices of appeal or requests for certification to appeal;
- In relation to the preparation of appeal briefs and the handling of pre-appeal motions, review trial records, conduct database searches and undertake legal research and writing.
- Provide legal advice to members of trial teams of the Office of the Prosecutor;
-Assist the Senior Appeals Counsel or the Appeals Counsel in preparing for oral argument in appeals, attend court before the Appeals Chamber and make oral submissions at appeal hearings or related proceedings;
- Ensure compliance with orders or directives of the Appeals Chamber;
- Assist in the preparation and delivery of in-house legal training within the Office of the Prosecutor; and
- Discharge promptly and competently any other task assigned by his/her supervisors.

Education
Education: Advanced law degree from a university of recognized standing. Advanced studies in International Criminal law or International Humanitarian Law with relevant work experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced law degree.
Work Experience
A minimum of 5 years of relevant practical legal experience is required. Of that period, at least 2 years must have been spent doing advocacy at the international criminal justice level. The ability to conduct legal research and high quality writing are required. The candidate must be of good professional background, with no disciplinary record relating to unprofessional or unethical conduct.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (UNICTR). For the post advertised, fluency in English or French is required and a good working knowledge of the other language is desirable. Knowledge of the Kinyarwanda language is an added advantage

Assessment Method
