BETTY AND GORDON MOORE CENTER FOR SCIENCE
All of CI’s work is guided by rigorous, cutting-edge science. The Betty and Gordon Moore Center for Science at Conservation International values and maps the essential goods and services nature provides to humanity worldwide. This science empowers CI to chart a course for field initiatives and advise businesses and governments on how conservation is integral to prosperity. The Moore Center creates the metrics, tools and technologies CI needs to effect change at scale. To ensure rigor and impact, CI each year publishes over 60 peer-reviewed papers with a significant portion in top ranked scientific journals.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the President of Conservation International, the Senior Vice President for Science is an entrepreneurial leader with a track record of breakthrough scientific research and a proven ability to develop high impact partnerships with leading global organizations. S/He leads CI’s science endeavors and is responsible for providing the strategic direction, management and oversight of the Moore Center for Ecosystem Science and its 60 staff.
The SVP leads and manages the Moore Center to ensure high-level delivery of results to advance CI’s business model and institutional priorities. This position leads the development and implementation of global science strategies. This includes strategies to:
- Measure, value and map essential natural capital
- Develop nature-based climate solutions
- Develop and implement innovative methods for sustainable development economics, metrics, and policy analysis
- Horizon scan
Strategy Development, Implementation and Management
- Ability to identify strategic issues and priorities, develop implementation teams and plans, and serve as the key decision-maker on programmatic, fundraising and operational issues
- Detailed knowledge of global research landscape and ability to assess merits of new research ideas, including identifying synergies with other research and sustainable development groups and organizations
Partnerships
- Has extensive network of leading academic, think tank and policy experts, and proven ability to establish high impact partnerships among organizations
Fundraising
- Demonstrated capacity for fundraising in the science arena with both foundations and wealthy donors with demonstrated results at securing multimillion dollar gifts
People and Program Management
- Strong track record of successful leadership and management of large geographically dispersed teams
- Ability to mentor and motivate staff and provide leadership across a diverse team of scientific and operational professionals
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS
The preferred candidate should have the following attributes:
- Track record of leading breakthrough scientific research
- A proven ability to develop high impact partnerships among globally leading organizations
- Proven track record of transforming research results into practical decision-making tools and improved practices and policy by governments, private sector and civil society
- Outstanding publication record in sustainable development-related science
- 15+ years of experience at a comparable level of seniority
- International experience preferably in multiple developing countries
- A proven track record of successful fundraising at the $1 million+ level
Preferred Qualifications:
- The position would benefit greatly from strong science experience in tropical developing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, East and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands as well as active involvement in the development of and engagement in international conventions and agreements, and with the most senior level government officials (ministers and heads of state).
- Fluency in French, Spanish and/or Portuguese would be an asset.
EDUCATION
- Ph.D. in sustainable development, development economics or other field related to CI’s science priorities
