Geneva Call is a neutral and impartial humanitarian non-governmental organization that engages with armed non-State actors (ANSAs) to promote their respect for international humanitarian norms in armed conflicts and other situations of armed violence, in particular regarding the protection of civilians.
Geneva Call is registered as a Foundation under Swiss law. It carried out 68 projects in 24 countries in 2012, with an annual budget of approximately KCHF 3.5.
Main Role
Under the supervision of the Africa Programme Director, the post holder is responsible for the implementation of operations in a number of countries covered by the Department, with emphasis given to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Main activities
- Lead, or assist, in project design, including the preparation of concept papers, funding proposals and budgets, fundraising;
- Lead, or assist in, in project management and implementation, including organizing and participating in field missions and activities, supervising local staff and consultants, liaising with partners and stakeholders, reporting to donors, and overseeing project monitoring and evaluation;
- Conduct background research and prepare conflict assessment, stakeholder mapping and situation reports on selected countries;
- Attend and, where appropriate, represent the Department in conferences, workshops and meetings with stakeholders;
- Participate in annual and quarterly programme evaluations, and in strategic planning;
- Manage information and knowledge, including filing, within the Department;
- Provide other programme or project-related assistance, including administrative assistance, as required by the Programme Director;
- Participate in the overall activities of Geneva Call;
- Perform any other duties as required by the Programme Director.
Required qualifications
- Advanced degree in international relations, political science, history, development studies or a related field, or equivalent work experience;
- At least 7 years of relevant work experience in humanitarian contexts with ANSAs in Africa;
- Knowledge of international humanitarian law and human rights standards. More precisely, experience working on child protection and sexual violence issues would be highly valued;
- Ability to analyse information, evaluate options and to think and plan strategically; Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills with experience of negotiation and representation at a high level.
- Ability to work under pressure and in conflict-affected settings, and to handle numerous tasks simultaneously;
- Willingness to work independently and with minimum supervision, and as a part of a multicultural team;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Excellent command of English and French (both oral and written);
- Demonstrable computer literacy, including the MS package;
- Swiss citizen or the appropriate status to obtain a valid work permit according to current Swiss legislation.
