Protection International (PI) is seeking to recruit a representative for its work in and from the East & Horn of Africa.
PI is an international non-profit organization researching strategies and security management tools that protect human rights defenders and sharing its expertise in this area with people at risk for their human rights work all around the world. PI sees human rights defenders as agents of change who form a pillar of free and just societies. In many parts of the world, HRDs face threats from state and non-state actors for their human rights work. PI works with human rights defenders to develop strategies tailored to their profile and context.
The role The PI Representative is responsible for PI’s work in the region of the East and Horn of Africa and the wider African continent (except DRC). The PI Representative is part of a team of four, based in Nairobi. (S)he travels regularly in the region and occasionally to Europe.
Main responsibilities Responsible for crafting the strategic plans (per country), implementation of the corresponding work plans and the application of PI policies to the work in the region, in coordination with Head Office
Represent PI towards stakeholders (local and international civil society, national and international authorities, donors) involved in the protection of HRD and develop strategic collaboration
Contribute to PI’s internal learning, exchange and knowledge-sharing (PI colleagues/teams in Asia, Latin-America and Europe);
Bring the best out of the local team (supervise, assess performance of staff)
Account for PI’s work in the region to PI’s governance structure (regular reporting)
Contribute to fund-raising efforts
Represent PI towards stakeholders (local and international civil society, national and international authorities, donors) involved in the protection of HRD and develop strategic collaboration

Skills & Experience University degree in law, human rights, political science, social sciences or related field
5 years of work experience, 3 years of experience in team management
Experience in human rights work in Africa
Experience in project management (including financial dimension)
Experience as educator/trainer
Excellent analytical and research skills
Excellent interpersonal, communication, representational and negotiation skills
Ability to bring the best out of a team
Excellent spoken and written English; French and Spanish language skills are an asset
Ability to work independently, high adaptability, ability to work under stress in a sensitive environment
High level of computer literacy
Available for travel and flexible working hours
5 years of work experience, 3 years of experience in team management
Experience in human rights work in Africa
Experience in project management (including financial dimension)
Experience as educator/trainer
Excellent analytical and research skills

The offer One-year, renewable contract with six month probation period. Contract conform Kenyan labour law. Health insurance cover. Minimal relocation package if applicable.
