About IVAC:
The mission of the International Vaccine Access Center (IVAC) at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is to accelerate global access to life-saving vaccines through the development and implementation of evidence-based policies. The work of IVAC focuses on disease epidemiology, vaccine economics and supply, monitoring and evaluation of vaccine introduction and Center programs, and advocacy, policy and communications activities to increase the profile of and global action on vaccine-preventable disease.
Specifically, our work includes:
• Determining global, regional and local burdens of disease
• Evaluating the safety, immunogenicity, and effectiveness of vaccines
• Understanding local and policy-maker perceptions of a variety of important diseases, including pneumonia and diarrhea, and and related vaccines

About the position:
The Policy and Advocacy Associate will work within the Policy Advocacy and Communications (PA&C) team of IVAC and split their time between the Nigeria Country Programs and the Global Advocacy & Communications sub-teams.
Reporting to the Nigeria Country Programs Lead, the successful candidate will assist in the management of a portfolio of projects that include an implementation study on accountability for routine immunization and a sector coordination project on strengthening state primary health care boards. The Associate will be undertaking tasks that may include liaising with partners, donors and consultants, and following up on tasks, timelines and deliverables. Furthermore, the Associate will contribute to research, analysis and publications.
The Associate will also spend approximately 20% time supporting the Advocacy & Communications Manager, with the translation of the evidence base for immunization into messages and materials tailored for a variety of audiences, particularly developing country decision-makers.
The ideal candidate should be a skilled communicator, able to interpret and translate scientific data into messages and materials tailored for a variety of audiences including pediatricians, policy-makers, health decision-makers, global health donors and the general public. Writing skills must be strong. As this position requires interaction with a variety of internal and external stakeholders, an outgoing, team-oriented person willing to pitch in on a variety of other projects will be highly valued. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment is important and the candidate must be able to think strategically and be a problem solver.

Primary responsibilities:
Specific tasks will include
• Conduct desk reviews and literature reviews relevant to the team’s agenda-setting and policy-making work on vaccine delivery and access
• Conduct policy analyses and produce policy briefs to aid in the increased uptake of data for decision-making on vaccine introductions in low and middle income countries
• Contribute to developing protocols and instruments for operations research on vaccine or health system strengthening
• Assist with or lead in writing project reports, white papers and manuscripts for peer review publication
• Develop tailored strategies for message delivery aimed at increasing political will and action for vaccine uptake
• Assist with the development of evidence-based materials and messages for a variety of external audiences
• In conjunction with the team leads, foster and maintain relationships with in-country partners and funders
• Actively facilitate communication between the Nigeria-based and Baltimore-based IVAC team members.
• Coordinate the circulation of key Nigeria project developments internally to IVAC and actively participate in strategy discussions around related outreach
• Develop, write and edit content for blogs, newsletters, websites and external media pieces
• Assist the Nigeria Country Programs Lead to develop and workflow consultants’ scope of work and project monitoring
• Work with PA&C’s project coordinator to identify and monitor scheduled project deliverables, milestones, and required tasks for the Nigeria team
• Travel internationally by air, as required, up to 20%

Qualifications:
• Master's degree or higher in Public Health, Epidemiology or other relevant fields
• Minimum 2-3 years experience, with at least 2 years working in a developing country setting (experience in the Nigerian or African contexts preferred)
• Knowledge and experience of international health policy mechanisms
• Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as excellent interpersonal skills are required
• Highly organized and able to work independently
• Demonstrated problem solving and analytic skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Ability to work successfully in a small team
• Ability to interact with multiple stakeholders from multiple backgrounds. An understanding of stakeholders from sectors outside of the public health area is a plus.
