Project Coordinator
Frankfurt Zoological Society seeks to appoint a Project Coordinator for its Conservation Research for East Africa’s Threatened Ecosystems (CREATE) project in Tanzania. The project investigates relationships between poverty reduction, human-wildlife conflict, and environmental conservation in two ecosystems: Serengeti in Tanzania and North Luangwa in Zambia, aiming to find effective long-term solutions for sustaining wildlife, natural resources, and local human communities.
THE ROLE:
Reporting to the CREATE Project Leader, the role of the Project Coordinator is to
· Manage the project’s research-related activities in the Serengeti ecosystem,
· Coordinate outreach and dissemination of results from project activities,
· Build positive links with communities and stakeholders across the Serengeti ecosystem,
· Manage the CREATE project in Tanzania in conjunction with the Project Leader.
MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Plan, organise, and manage project field activities across the Serengetiecosystem.
· Coordinate logistics and field support for Tanzanian and international research students.
· Coordinate project outreach and research dissemination in Tanzania.
· Provide input into surveys, data collection, and data management.
· Ensure research activities are locally-appropriate and implemented using best practice.
· Supervise and develop the skills, knowledge, and capacity of project staff in Tanzania.
· Build productive links with communities and relevant institutions.
· Develop effective partnerships and collaborations with project stakeholders.
· Work effectively with TANAPA, TAWIRI, Wildlife Division, and District governments.
· Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual workplans as well as regular budgets and reports.
· Represent FZS with stakeholders and at local, regional, and national forums.
· Ensure proper and transparent use and reporting of project funds.
· Ensure responsible use and care of project facilities and equipment.
· Work closely with the Project Leader to manage project administration.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Required:
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualifications.
- At least 2 years experience of research activities, fieldwork, and data collection within a conservation, social science, development, or related context.
- At least 2 years experience organising, coordinating, supervising, and/or reporting on field research activities.
- At least 2 years experience in community outreach, dissemination, or related activities.
- Experience supervising, working within, and/or developing a project team.
- Fluency in written and spoken Kiswahili and English.
- Able and willing to live and work in remote areas and rural field sites, often under difficult conditions, and travel extensively within Tanzania.
- Willing to work flexible hours and accommodate variation in workload as required.
- Computer literacy with (at least) email and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Effective communication, presentation, and writing skills.
- Current unrestricted Tanzanian driving licence for manual vehicles and willing to drive.
Desirable:
- Postgraduate qualification in conservation, social science, development, or management.
- Experience working within the Serengeti ecosystem.
- Experience driving 4WD vehicles in varied terrain under a wide range of conditions.

TERMS AND REMUNERATION:
- Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
- Full-time position for initially one year, subject to a three-month probation period.
- Contract renewal subject to performance.
- Based at the FZS Fort Ikoma office with frequent and often extended travel to field sites.
- Basic shared housing provided if required.
- 30 days paid leave per annum
- 15% pension contribution.
