The National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI) is seeking current or recent graduate candidates for internships with NDI's Southern and East Africa Program for April to August 2013. The Project Assistant will be responsible for conducting country and program-specific research, attending meetings on Southern and East African Affairs and providing administrative support for country programs. This internship is based in Washington, D.C. and requires a time commitment of up to 30 to 40 hours per week.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities:
- Research and gather materials for country specific programs;
- Monitor news related to the region and drafts daily news updates;
- Assist in the backstopping of field offices activities;
- Attend meetings and seminars on Southern and East African affairs and prepare oral and written presentations to SEA team members;
- Assist with special projects including travel, event preparation and research;
- Provide administrative support to assigned country programs, including filing, faxing, copying, mailing, and/or event preparation.
Skills and Abilities:
- Demonstrated interest in Southern and East Africa;
- Generally pursing a graduate degree, Â or a recent graduate; relevant degree programs might include, but are not limited to, political science, international relations, international development, and African studies;
- Well-organized and skilled in prioritizing and managing multiple tasks;
- Ability to follow through on multiple tasks and coordinate with several team members in a fast-paced environment; deadline oriented;
- Excellent writing skills;
- Portuguese/French/Swahili language skills useful, but not required;
- Experience with Google Apps (Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, G+, etc.) strongly desired;
- Legally authorized to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.
