The Financial Analyst, located in Grameen Foundation’s AppLab Uganda, will be responsible for financial analysis supporting all programs within the AppLab Uganda office – currently the AppLab Money programs and the Community Knowledge Worker programs. He/she is expected to have strong financial analysis, business modeling and communicative skills that support Grameen Foundations work. He/she will work in a collaborative, innovative environment and be responsible for conducting financial and analytical studies and help create business plans and provide recommendations for courses of action based on analyses.
About Grameen Foundation AppLab Uganda: AppLab comprises the field innovation hubs where Grameen Foundation develops and deploys mobile phone-based solutions to alleviate poverty. In Uganda, we focus on using ICT to support agriculture and financial services for the poor. Our Community Knowledge Worker (CKW) program supports agricultural extension through a network of locally nominated farmers who use smartphones to collect and disseminate real-time, actionable information. Through our AppLab Money programs, we develop new mobile financial services products and work with partners to bring them to scale to reach the last-mile. The Financial Analyst will support the financial analysis needs for both programs in Uganda.
Reporting: The Financial Analyst will allocate time equally across the two programs and report to the Project Manager, AppLab Money Incubator and Operations Manager, CKW Program.
Availability: This person is expected to work a typical work week of 40 hours plus additional hours as necessary to get the job done. The position may require periodic domestic travel of up to 25%.
Specific Responsibilities
Financial Projections and Valuations
• Conduct financial analyses for our partner organizations:
o Review current financial projects and/or developing projections based on new product or service scenarios
o Develop customer-level vs. product-level profitability models
o Analyzing current product or service costing models
o Conduct valuations to assess scenarios, which could include evaluating the net present value (NPV), internal rate of return (IRR), or payback period
o Develop and apply financial models for business cases
• Make recommendations and communicate findings:
o Help prepare strategic recommendations and business cases based on analysis
o Provide information to management by assembling and summarizing data; preparing reports; making presentations of findings, analyses, and recommendations
o Present results to project team as well as partner senior management teams
o Conduct financial analysis training for individuals in our team or within our partner organizations
Research and Partner Engagement
• Work with field teams to evaluate, review and make recommendations around current commercials model that are in place
• Research and analyze financial data for internal and external clients
• Engage with partners directly to access information needed to conduct analysis or financial models
• Work with partners to ensure they understand analyses and models being created
Participate in Project Teams
• Participate in project team meetings and strategy sessions for relevant projects
• Contribute to team presentations and documents to deliver results to our partners
Training
• Periodically provides basic training sessions to the office in financial analysis, projections, valuations, etc.
Ideal Candidate
• Strong financial analysis skills: forecasting, corporate finance, information analysis, financial planning & strategy. Experience understanding financial institution business models and financials preferred.
• Strong analytical skills and experience: ability to utilize analytical rigor to drive improved decision making and support development of business cases
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Self-motivated, agile thinker
• Ability to juggle multiple priorities with changing deadlines
• Enthusiasm and passion for our work – with strong mission alignment and desire to improve the lives of the poor
• Understanding of financial services and mobile technology preferred
Qualifications
• Degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
• At least 4 years of work experience in financial analysis, consulting, or an equivalent role
• Deep knowledge of Microsoft office products (excel, powerpoint, word, etc.)
