The University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint a Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), who will be responsible for providing academic leadership. This will include academic and strategic planning, quality improvement and assurance, development of new academic programmes and oversight of academic policies. In particular the incumbent will be required to focus on expanding postgraduate enrolment whilst enhancing throughput within these programmes.
The successful applicant will not only be an outstanding academic who meets the University requirements for appointment at a professorial level, but must also have the ability to integrate management functions and be able to effectively interface with internal as well as external stakeholders. The University is particularly keen to attract academic leadership that will ensure delivery of quality teaching and research, relevant to the needs of the communities it serves. In addition it will be expected that the appointed candidate will provide the vision and strategic insight essential to maintaining and enhancing the University’s standing nationally and internationally. He/she will also have a collaborative leadership style, personal integrity and a commitment to academic excellence. Knowledge of the South African tertiary education environment and its particular complexities will also be a requirement at this level of appointment.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) will be a member of the University’s Senior Executive Team. The appointment is for a 5 year fixed term, and may be renewed subject to applicable procedures. An attractive remuneration package, which is commensurate with similar positions in South African Universities is offered and may include annual bonus, generous leave, provident fund, medical aid, relocation expenses and remission of fees for dependents’ studying.
