Background:
UNOSAT is the operational satellite applications programme of The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR); it is a technology-intensive programme active since 2000 in applied research and innovative applications relating to geospatial information technology and satellite analysis, and mapping.
UNOSAT is in charge of the implementation of a large in -country project in Chad. The main outcome is to increase national resilience in the face of hazards and climatic conditions via the active management of water resources.
The GIS and remote Sensing Analyst will be part of a dedicated team based in Geneva and tasked to support UNOSAT in the execution of the project. The candidate will work on the production of a geographic information system (GIS), the processing and analysis of satellite images, and the preparation of series of geological and hydrogeological maps covering the project country.
The main language used for project material and deliverable is French.
Responsibilities:
Under the technical guidance of the Project Chief, the Analyst will be responsible for the following duties:
• Make the selection and procurement of optical and radar satellite images for the project, and when delivered, download and store the images.
• Produce geological, geomorphological and hydrogeological GIS data to be used with the creation of maps, tables and charts in support of the project.
• Develop, test and run procedures on the satellite images for the extraction of geology and soil information and conduct the analyses in full consultation with the Project Manager.
• Run and validate the algorithms for hydrographic and relief products from HydroSHEDS project and digital elevation models (DEMs), and produce the GIS data to be used with the creation of maps, tables and charts in support of the project.
• Develop, test and run algorithms for batch processing satellite images and raster data.
• Use data and mapping standards, apply quality control procedures on all products generated and disseminated, and describe the related metadata.
• Develop tutorials and user guides for GIS and image analysis methodologies.
• Any other duties as may be requested by the Project Chief.
Qualifications
Education:
University degree (Bachelor or equivalent) in geometrics, remote sensing, computer sciences or closely related discipline, with qualification relevant to a specialized area (image analysis, data administration, web services) developed through training.
Experience:
A minimum of three years of remote sensing and GIS experience and a complete confidence in handling geospatial information products, including remote sensing imagery, GIS data, maps, GIS services is required. Extensive knowledge in satellite imagery analysis and an in-depth knowledge in the use of image processing software and techniques are highly regarded. Work experience in the field of planning and establishing GIS for local/regional authorities is a definite advantage. Expert knowledge of commercial (ENVI, ERDAS Imagine, ESRI) and OGC-compliant GIS software solutions, including database design and administration and web services (e.g. WMS, WFS) is essential. Familiarity with the humanitarian or development context would be an asset.
Languages: Fluency in spoken and written French and English.
Remuneration: Monthly fees of USD 5,000. Contract period: 3 months renewable.
