The British Council in Uganda is seeking to recruit a suitable candidate for the above post to be based in Kampala.
Purpose of job
To develop partnerships and strategic alliances with the private and public sectors; and to contribute and to engage with large-scale product development and delivery so that agreed engagement and funding targets are met. To build and maintain relationships to ensure influence with partners.
Context and Environment
The Programme Director is a member of the senior management team (SMT) with an oversight over a programme portfolio of £1m. The Programme Director reports directly to the Country Director and manages 4 Programme Managers. With a downturn in programmes in 2013/14 from the previous year, the Programme Director is responsible for bringing in significant new business in the areas of schools, society and young people, English and new UK examinations.
Accountabilities, Duties and Responsibilities
- To increase funding (through the books and in kind) from a range of partners in line with British Council Uganda’s strategic plan. To identify new opportunities and manage a pursuit list for new project partnerships and external funding sources for Uganda.
- To ensure that appropriate budget planning, forecast and monitoring is in place and exceptions for plans are reported in accordance with financial policies and procedures.
- Contribute to external environment risk analysis and management by monitoring external (political, legal and economic) and internal (corporate standards and procedures) environments; and analyse changes and developments; recommending appropriate course of action in response to environmental changes; in accordance with British Council’s Enterprise Risk Management Framework.
- To build a high performance project team in line with British Council procedures, standards and values and, in accordance with Essential HR and Equality & diversity policies.
- Serve as member of country senior management team (SMT), country programme team and other teams as appropriate.
- To ensure all projects are monitored in accordance with corporate guidelines and that the outcomes are communicated within the market and position British Council projects and Brand amongst stakeholders.
Experience Skills and Qualifications
- Experience of working with donors on large scale development projects; or of working with multinational company on business development.
- Strong team player, self-starter and ability to be an active member of the senior management team
- Ability to work well with limited supervision and with limited resources
- Excellent inter-personal skills and ability to communicate to both internal and external audiences with the ability to establish and manage trusted relationships with key stakeholders
- First degree in a related discipline
- Strong project management background and expertise
