Rakai Health Sciences Program Jobs Feb 2013


Rakai Health Sciences Program is a bio-medical research and service delivery collaborative initiative located in Rakai district, South Western Uganda.

It strives to improve health outcomes of populations through a combination of community-based research, curative services, and prevention strategies. It is based at the Uganda Virus Research Institute- Entebbe and Kalisizo in Rakai District.

The program is seeking to strengthen its staffing position in order to efficiently execute its research and service activities. Applications are therefore invited from qualified and competent Ugandans to fill vacant positions based at Rakai Health sciences Program-KALISIZO, RAKAI DISTRICT as indicated below: -

Transport Coordinator (1 Position)

Reporting to: Program Administrator

Job purpose:

The main focus of this role will be to assume responsibility for managing end-to-end transport requirements for both our Entebbe and Kalisizo offices.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Plan, organize and direct all aspects of the Program transport service.

• Undertake day to day operational administration of RHSP transport, ensuring that vehicles are scheduled and ready to meet end user needs.

• Minimize liability to the organization by anticipating problems, evaluating magnitude of the problem and taking actions to correct problem and/or reduce risk.

• Manage the automobile fleet system, conduct monthly performance analysis and prepare reports to guide management on appropriate decision making

• Monitor the transportation department automobile maintenance program. Ensure all routine maintenance and needed repair procedures are completed by appropriate service providers in a timely manner, and keep up to date vehicle service and spare part replacement records.

• Maintain transportation section records such as staff time sheets, daily inspection forms, mileage, maintenance logs, fuel receipt/consumption records and accident reports.

• Prepare monthly reports of all automobile inspections, information on mileage covered, license matters, first aid kits, and general inspection.

• Perform other administrative tasks in the transport section.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• The successful candidate should possess a degree in humanities from a recognized institution

• A diploma in fleet / Automobile management is an added advantage

• Knowledge in vehicle maintenance and management.

• Should posses a Valid driving permit

• Knowledge in defensive driving

• Leadership and supervisory skills

• High level of integrity.

• Must have Computer skills

• Willingness to work and reside in a rural setting – Rakai District.

• Willing and ready to work for long hours.

Clinical Officer (Several positions)

Reporting to: Study Supervisor

Job purpose:

To provide support to the study investigators in medical assessment of all study participants, collecting important clinical details, performing clinical examinations and relevant tests and performing follow up data collection in the clinic/field.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Collection of qualitative and quantitative data by administering a questionnaire or using electronic methods.

• Provision of health education to potential study participants (as guided by standard operating procedures (SOP)).

• Seeking informed consent from potential study participants (as per informed consent SOP).

• Collection of data and biological specimens as well as proper labeling and handling of data forms and specimens as per pertinent SOPs.

• Clinical evaluation and care of participants in consultation with study physicians and offer pre-test counseling to the respondents in the study communities.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• The successful candidate should have a Diploma in clinical medicine and public health/diploma in comprehensive nursing from a reputable institution.

• Posses a valid registration with the relevant licensing body

• Working experience of at least 1 year in a reputable healthy organization

• Certificates in Good clinical practice and Human subjects Protection, experience conducting research and HIV care work is added advantage but not a requirement.

• Ability to ride a motor cycle within the study or service areas of Rakai district.

• Willingness to reside in Rakai district.

• Good interpersonal and organizational skills.

• Fluent in Luganda the local language

• Ability to work under minimum supervision.

Laboratory Technicians (02 positions)

Reporting to: Laboratory Supervisor

Job purpose:

The Laboratory Technician will be involved in all Laboratory procedures in the RHSP field Laboratory at Kalisizo Station. He/ She will be required to work under Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) guidelines.

Qualifications, skills, knowledge and experience:

The successful candidate should possess diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology from a recognized institution with a bias in hematology/ chemistry

He/should have at least 2 years experience of at least 2 years in a large laboratory setting.

The Person should be:

• Pleasant, social, hardworking, flexible, with a spirit of team work/ building.

• With good interpersonal skills, and high integrity.

• Fluent in English (spoken and written).

• Self-motivated and able to work under minimum supervision.

• Willingness to work and reside in a rural setting – Rakai District.

• Willing and ready to work for longer hours.

Counselors (2 positions )

Job Purpose:

The Counselor will provide psychological counseling to Program clients in a wide variety of conditions/issues ranging from HIV related problems to Psycho-social issues such as Domestic Violence and child abuse.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• The successful candidate should possess diploma in counseling and guidance from a recognized institution.

• A certificate in HIV/AIDS counseling conforming to the MOH HCT policy is an added advantage

• Must be a registered counselor with the Uganda Counseling Association

• Must follow the code of ethics associated with the respective certification.

• Have obtained at least five years’ experience in counseling, with a minimum of two years in HIV and AIDS counseling or medical environment/setting

• Pleasant, social, hardworking, flexible, with a spirit of team work/building.

• With good interpersonal skills, and high integrity.

• Fluent in English and Luganda (spoken and written).

• Self-motivated and able to work under minimum supervision.

• Should posses a valid Motor-cycle riding permit or willing to learn riding a motorcycle

• Willingness to work and reside in a rural setting – Rakai District.

• Willing and ready to work for long hours

Nurse (several positions )

Reporting to: Study Supervisor

Job purpose:

To provide support to the study investigators in collecting important clinical details from study participants and data collection in the clinic/field sites.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide medical care to patients or study participants

• Carrying out Census at household level

• Administer study consent to study participants

• Conduct health education and deliver research related information to the study participants.

• Screen, enroll, take medical history and examine eligible study participants.

• Complete study documents (Source documents and/or Case report forms) for the study participants.

• Collect blood samples/specimen appropriately and deliver them for testing to central lab in Kalisizo.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• The successful candidate should have a certificate in general enrolled nursing from a reputable institution.

• Working experience of at least 6 months in a reputable healthy organization

• Certificates in Good clinical practice and Human subjects Protection, experience in conducting research related and HIV care is an advantage but not a requirement.

• Posses a valid registration with the relevant licensing body

• Ability to ride a motorcycle with in study and service areas of Rakai district.

• Willingness to reside in Rakai district.

• Good interpersonal and organizational skills.

• Fluent in Luganda the local language

• Ability to work under minimum supervision.

Drivers (2 positions)

Reporting to: Transport Coordinator

Job purpose:

The driver will be responsible for driving program vehicles to designated locations with strict adherence to local traffic laws and in accordance to program guidelines and regulations pertaining to vehicles.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• Minimum of ordinary level certificate

• A minimum of at least 2 years driving experience

• Must have a valid driving permit with Classes B, CM and DL

• Must have basic training in mechanics and wiring

• Willingness to reside and work in a rural setting of Kalisizo

• Ability to read and write English clearly

• Available to start work immediately

Mechanic (1 position)

Reporting to: Transport Coordinator

Job purpose:

The mechanic will ensure that all automobiles are in good mechanical condition by carrying out general mechanics and service of automobiles.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience

• O level

• Diploma in motor vehicle mechanics

• Valid driving permit

• At least 3 years experience in a busy automobile workshop

• High level of integrity

• Good communication skills

• High level of attention to details

• Team work/team building skills

• Physically fit

• No eye defects and no medical condition that is contra indicated for driving

Security guard (1 Position)

Reporting to: Security Supervisor

Job purpose:

The Security Guard will be responsible for day and night guarding of all program property, office premises and designated program residential/ guest house.

Specifications;

• Physically fit

• Willingness to reside and work in a rural setting of Kalisizo

• Willingness to work in shifts that stretch over the weekends according to schedule

• Available to start work immediately
