Search for Common Ground (SFCG) is an international non-profit organization that promotes peaceful resolution of conflict. With headquarters in Washington, DC and a European office in Brussels, Belgium, SFCG’s mission is to transform how individuals, organizations, and governments deal with conflict - away from adversarial approaches and toward cooperative solutions. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities. With a total of approximately 450 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects from 39 offices in 30 countries, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.
Within Sub-Saharan Africa, SFCG works in sixteen countries: Angola, Burundi, Chad, Central African Republic, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Liberia, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe. Since 2011, SFCG works in Tanzania to develop responsible business practices in the extractive industry sector, as well as through its multimedia division, Common Ground Productions (CCP), to produce and broadcast a TV series targeting a youth audience with the aim to promote gender equality.
Summary of Position
SFCG is implementing a project in northern Tanzania to provide conflict resolution and human rights training to Tanzanian police officials, government officials and community members, as well as to improve relations between all stakeholders in four mining areas. The project uses an innovative mix of multimedia, training, and community outreach activities to build local capacity to resolve mine-community conflict.
The Project Manager will be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the project, including implementing project activities, managing the project team, ensuring a sound financial management of the project, and reporting to donors. This will require a regular presence (about 50% of the time) on project sites to maintain solid contacts with local community leaders and members, local government representatives, mining company staff in the field, local organizations, and other key local stakeholders. Based in Dar Es Salaam or Mwanza, the candidate will report to SFCG’s Sustainable Business Practice Director currently based in Dar es Salaam.
Responsibilities
• Oversee project implementation, including coordination of activities, management of field staff and partnerships, reporting to the Country Director and providing capacity and team building for field staff ;
• Guide and provide logistical and organizational support to field staff on project activities ;
• Manage the budget and oversee the sound financial management of the project in line with SFCG and donors’ policies and procedures, working closely with SFCG finance teams in Dar et Washington DC;
• Ensure timely grant reporting and compliance with SFCG standards and donor requirements ;
• Coordinate Monitoring and Evaluation efforts, working with program staff, SFCG’s DM&E Specialists from the Institutional Learning Team (ILT) and donors as needed. Responsibilities include monitoring plans, oversight of indicators’ data collection and analysis towards accomplishment of established goals, and coordination of evaluations ;
• Maintain good working relationships and engage regularly with relevant stakeholders at the country-level, including partners, government officials, civil society groups, the private sector, and donors ;
• Represent SFCG at donor and partners’ meetings as appropriate ;
• Assist in the process of implementing the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (www.voluntaryprinciples.org) at the national level ;
• Ensure project and staff compliance with SFCG Operations Manual Policies and Procedures ;
• Maintain regular written and oral reporting to the Country Director on key country, regional, program, security and staff issues ;
In addition, the Project Manager will work with the Country Director and program staff to establish strategic priorities for SFCG in Tanzania, including defining program priorities, plans and long-term strategy within the overall Africa Program vision and goals. With these priorities, collaboration will be expected to:
• Identify and assess current and existing conflict management and sustainable business practice (SBP) initiatives in Tanzania ;
• Identify potential new partners and seek their input through individual meetings ;
• Contribute to defining SFCG’s vision and specific objectives in Tanzania, including identifying relevant SBP tools and methodology ;
• Serve as point person for the development of new SBP proposals in Tanzania, including participation in project design, budgeting, drafting and revising narrative, in collaboration with the SBP Director and Tanzania Country Director, relevant program staff and SFCG’s program support staff based in HQ ;
• Be directly engaged in the continuing development of the organization, its mission and its staff, through the sharing of experience and knowledge, particularly contributing to its Institutional Learning efforts.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) in a related area, preferably in conflict resolution, international studies, peace-building, or human rights ;
At least five years of experience in peace-building, development and/or related fields ;
At least three years of field experience, preferably in East Africa ;
Experience in managing partnerships and coordinating complex, sensitive projects ;
Demonstrated experience in budget and financial management, including knowledge of international donors’ financial policies and procedures and ability to manage multi-donor funding ;
Dynamic leader with creative problem-solving skills, particularly in challenging situations ; Demonstrated experience in the production of narrative and financial reports for international donors ;
Experience and proven track record of successful fundraising and proposal writing ;
Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, as well as the ability to build and conduct effective professional working relationships, both internally and externally ;
Spoken and written fluency in English; Kiswahili language skills are highly desirable ;
Knowledge and previous exposure to extractive industry issues preferred ;
Experience with local community engagement and creative conflict resolution practices preferred ;
Ability and willingness to travel to about 50% of the time.
