The Commission of the African Union invites applications from citizens of Member States for a position of Legal Officer - Protection in the Department of Political Affairs.

2. JOB PURPOSE:
Assist the Senior Legal Officers responsible for protection activities in all the stages involved in complaints handling and provide technical assistance to Commissioners in the execution of their protection mandate.
3. MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Create awareness regarding the Communications procedure;
• Monitor human rights situation in Africa and provide regular feedback and updates on the human rights situation in Africa;
• Undertake research into the legal issues raised in the various communications and the provisions of the Charter;
• Contribute articles to the African Commission's Review and Newsletter;
• Draft resolutions and recommendations on Communications, cover the sessions and meetings of the African Commission and prepare the reports;
• Perform other duties as may be assigned.
5. EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates must have a minimum of a university degree in law. A relevant advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) will be added advantage
6. WORK EXPERIENCE:
Candidates must have at least five (5) years of relevant professional experience. Previous experience with a human rights organization, especially at a regional, continental or international level, will be an added advantage.
6. OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS:
- Good knowledge of the African System of human rights;
- Strong analytical skills and ability to prepare legal opinions;
- Good communication and planning skills;
- Excellent knowledge of international organizations;
- Computer proficiency;
- Ability to work in a team
7. LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT:
Proficiency in one of the African Union working languages. Knowledge of one or several other working languages would be an added advantage.
8. AGE REQUIREMENT:
Candidates must preferably be between 25 and 35 years old.
9. TENURE OF APPOINTMENT:
The appointment will be made on a fixed term contract for a period of three (3) years, of which the first twelve months will be considered as a probationary period. Thereafter, the contract will be for a period of two years renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.

11. REMUNERATION:
Indicative basic salary of US$27,892.00 per annum plus other related entitlements e.g. post adjustment (46% of basic salary), housing allowance
(US$13,248.00 per annum), education allowance (75% of tuition and other related expenses for every eligible dependent up to a maximum of US$7,800.00 per child per annum), etc for internationally recruited staff of the Commission.
