About Us:
The Global Development Network (GDN) is an International Organization that supports research in economics and social sciences in developing countries, and connects researchers and development research institutes globally. Founded in 1999, GDN is headquartered in New Delhi, with offices in Cairo and Washington D.C.GDN’s core business is building research capacity. It does this through:
- Supporting the research capacity of social scientists in developing countries, and connecting them as a cadre of global leaders in development research.
- Fostering new ways of producing, structuring and mobilizing development knowledge in key research areas.
- Interconnecting researchers, knowledge, expertise and resources in support of development research capacity in the Global South.
GDN works in collaboration with 11 Regional Network Partners, international donor organizations and governments, research institutes, academic institutions, think tanks and more than 12,000 individual researchers worldwide.
About the Competition:
One of GDN’s biggest annual activities is the Global Development Awards and Medals Competition- an innovative award scheme supported by the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan and other donors, that encourages original research coming out of developing and transition economies. Over 7,200 researchers and development practitioners representing more than 100 countries throughout the developing world have participated to-date. Since its inception in 2000, GDN has utilized over US$ 3.6 million for the Competition which includes research and travel grants to finalists and winners. The winners will be chosen by an eminent jury at GDN’s 14th Global Development Conference; an event attended by over 500 practitioners in the field of development to whom the finalists present their proposals/papers.
Competition Categories:
· Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development (ORD): ORD is a competitive research grant program which identifies and funds outstanding research proposals in developing and transition countries with high potential for excellence in research and clear policy implications for addressing development issues.
Finalists will be invited to travel and present their proposals at GDN’s 14th Annual Global Development Conference in Manila, the Philippines from 19-21 June 2013.
First Prize: US$ 30,000; Second Prize: US$ 10,000; Third Prize: US$ 5,000
· Medals for Research on Development (Medals): Medalsis a competitive grant programfor completed research papers that have engaged path-breaking approaches in addressing contemporary development issues in the theme of Inequality, Social Protection and Inclusive Growth.
The two top ranked finalists will get the opportunity to showcase their completed research papers in the plenary sessions at the 14th Annual Global Development Conference to be held in Manila, Philippines from 19-21 June, 2013. Experts and well-established scholars from each theme will be discussants and panelists at these plenary sessions
First Prize: US$ 10,000; Second Prize: US$ 5,000

Eligibility:
- Citizens and permanent residents of developing and transition countries.
- Citizens of developing and transition countries who are temporarily based in a developed country but not for more than five years.
- Applicant must be less than 45 years old as on 11 March, 2013.
- Under the ORD category, Winners from previous years are not eligible to apply with the same or similar research proposal. Winners from previous years cannot submit an application for the subsequent three years.
- Under the Medals category, Finalists and winners from previous years are not eligible to apply with the same or similar research papers.
