Under the direct supervision of the IUCN Regional Biodiversity Conservation Officer, the Biodiversity Conservation Intern will support the work and projects related to species and protected areas in Europe. This will include activities such as the coordination of certain project tasks, the organisation of workshops, research on certain topics, desk studies, writing of technical reports, fundraising as well as a range of administrative activities.

This internship provides a challenging and interesting opportunity to work in a dynamic international organisation and to gain work experience in the field of EU nature conservation projects.


  • Assist in the implementation of the Mediterranean Red List of Saproxylic Beetles, Dung Beetles and Butterflies, including the identification of experts, collaboration with experts and any other duties required to accomplish this task;
  • Assist in the implementation of a European Red List of Pollinators, Medicinal Plants and Marine Fishes, including the identification of experts, collaboration with experts and any other duties required to accomplish this task;
  • Support the development of project proposals within the European Programme that require specialized input on biodiversity issues;
  • Provide specialist biodiversity conservation input into the development of the IUCN European programme;
  • Represent IUCN ROfE in relevant biodiversity related meetings and workshops;
  • Organise workshops and meetings;
  • Provide a range of administrative support functions on a day-to-day basis (e.g. processing of invoices, consultancy contracts, etc);
  • Assist in keeping track of financial management of the programme.

It is an unpaid internship, but IUCN offers a modest monthly remuneration to contribute to living expenses (lunch and transport costs).


  • The internship has to be mandatory for gaining the diploma of the studies that the student is enrolled in, formalized by a work placement agreement/convention de stage between the academic institution and IUCN EU Representative Office;
  • Studying towards an university degree in environmental sciences, biology, ecology or a relevant discipline that is relevant to biodiversity conservation;
  • Affinity with the vision and mission of IUCN;
  • Good organizational, administrative, reporting and communication skills;
  • A motivated self-starter with an ability to work independently and meet tight deadlines without compromising the quality of outputs;
  • A team player with a strong interest to work in an international environment;
  • Excellent written and spoken English skills (other languages are an asset);
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
