Project Summary: AVSI is implementing a project aiming to increase the access and quality of education especially for girls through involving community participation in 4 schools in Eastern Equatoria State. In particular through a participatory approach the project will aim to improve quality of primary education while also addressing the cross-cutting issues of food security and basic needs. Through community sensitization, PTAs training and Open School day for parents, girls’ education will be promoted. To make the schools more conducive to learning, the project will focus on improved teaching and learning skills providing teachers development and classroom support. Community involvement will be strengthened through the direct participation of school mothers and fathers, community members and community leaders in the school activities.
Job Title: Teachers Trainer
Location: Ilugum ps, Lofi ps, Kotome ps, Panyikwara ps
Main Duty: The teacher trainer is responsible for improving the quality of teaching in the classroom, working closely and collaboratively with the local level Education Officers. The teacher trainer will guide the teachers to practice active teaching learning and child-friendly approaches. The teacher trainer will lead teachers, mothers and PTAs to make materials for the classroom. The teacher trainer will provide constant support/guidance inside the classrooms in the 4 targeted primary schools in Eastern Equatoria State being based at the boma level.
Specific duties:
• To support primary school teachers in lesson planning and teaching, timetable planning and management, preparation of teaching materials using locally available materials, classroom management, and any other teaching skills which need addressing;
• To observe lesson presentations and provide regular feedback and recommendations for improvement of teachers;
• To design and implement monthly topical training for teachers in the project area;
• To assist school management and teachers to maintain a clean and safe classroom environment;
• To identify teaching weaknesses and provide individualized mentoring and methodology assistance to teachers;
• To facilitate the formation of teacher support groups and peer observation teams;
• To ensure that schools maintain daily and weekly reports of teachers and pupils attendance, absenteeism, late comers, and classroom/ extra-curricular activities;
• To encourage the school community to observe the school calendar and avoid unnecessary closure of the school during weekdays;
• Ensure that all teachers observe the professional code of conduct and report any breaches in this code to the appropriate authorities
• Be responsible for empowering female teachers who will in turn support and promote girl child education
• Ensure that schools maintain records of materials resources (text books, furniture, food, and scholastic materials) and assist in the appropriate use and safe storage of these resources;
• To support PTA training and arise PTAs awareness on importance of education and in particular of girls participation
• Assist in identifying priorities for future support programs for schools in the project area;
• To maintain a mentoring record for each teacher and compile regular reports for the benefit of AVSI Education staff on school and teacher activities, progress, and challenges.
• To be based at Boma level where the school is located
Duty Station: Boma level in one of the following 4 Counties: Ikwoto, Torit, Kapoeta South and Magwi - Eastern Equatoria State

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor in teacher education or primary education
• At least 7 years of experience teaching-learning methods
• Experience working with communities at grass root level
• Experience in working with schools/education sector
• Good working knowledge of communities in Ikotos, Torit, Magwi and Kapoeta South Counties (to reside in one of these areas is a plus)
• Good knowledge of the English language – spoken and written
• Fluency in Juba Arabic and any other local languages spoken in the assigned locations
• Basic skills with computers (Microsoft Word & Excel) as well as reporting experience
• Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and diplomatic skills
• Knowledge and exposure to Southern Sudan education sector
Preferred Qualifications:
• Professional development in classroom management, peer observation, coaching and mentoring, knowledge of subject matter, planning for instruction
• Experience in community mobilization
• Proven support supervision skills
• Availability to work extensively in the rural areas
