Research Fellow – Vulnerability And Poverty Reduction
The quantitative analysis of vulnerability and poverty (Ref 485)
IDS is seeking to appoint an experienced researcher who specialises in the quantitative analysis of vulnerability and poverty in developing countries.
We will be particularly interested to appoint someone with an established reputation for research on either ‘the relationships between poverty, vulnerability and inequality’ or ‘poverty and vulnerability in urban contexts’.
Research connecting to other specialisms within the Vulnerability and Poverty Reduction Team will be an advantage. The team already supports key research themes on social protection, human wellbeing, conflict and nutrition.
VPR team members share a concern to bring human beings to the centre of their analysis and their engagement with policy and practice. This involves understanding the experiences that men, women and children have of vulnerability, poverty and justice. The approach not only values multi-disciplinarity but sees this as necessary for a rounded understanding of the nature and dynamics of poverty and vulnerability. The team places importance on generating empirical evidence alongside innovative conceptual thinking, in an effort both to better understand the dynamics of poverty and vulnerability in specific social and environmental contexts and to better engage with policy and practice in an effort to be more effective in reducing poverty, improving human wellbeing and enhancing social justice.
The successful candidate will be expected to have a doctoral level qualification in Economics, Development Studies, or a related social science discipline (an outstanding research career and practical experience may be taken as equivalent to a doctoral qualification). The candidate should have an excellent research and publication record related to or relevant to nutrition, poverty and vulnerability. A proven capacity to work in a multi-disciplinary team, in policy environments, with overseas partners and practical experience in the field are also essential, and language abilities beyond English will be an advantage. Analysis of complex policy problems, experience of post-graduate teaching and presentation skills are all essential to the post.
