The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is an international non-profit, non-governmental organization that carries out policy relevant research on population, health, education and development issues facing sub-Saharan Africa. With a grant from the Wellcome Trust, the Center is implementing a study aimed at determining the effectiveness of personalized home-based nutritional counseling on infant and young child feeding practices, simply referred to as the “IYCF study”. The study will run for a period of three years, effective from March 2012, in two slums of Nairobi. The IYCF project, nested in the Center’s Health Challenges and Systems Program seeks to recruit a Research Assistant to support the study.
Key Responsibilities/Expectations
The Research Assistant will work closely with the Project Manager and other project staff to implement the study. Key responsibilities/tasks will include:
- Work as the intervention monitor for the study, which will involve monitoring/supervision of the intervention activities. This will include close monitoring of infant feeding practices by mothers.
- Train community health workers
- Report writing
- Assist in relevant literature review and participate in scientific writing with other project researchers
- Enroll in a Master’s program and use data from the study for Master’s thesis
- Any other activity as assigned by the Project Manager
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- The ideal candidate is a female and preferably below 35 years of age
- Possess a first degree in Nutrition and/or Dietetics
- Intention to pursue a Masters degree while working within the project; those who have evidence of application to a Masters program or have admission thereof stand a better chance
- Good computer skills
- Excellent communication skills in English & Swahili (both written and verbal)
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Should be available immediately
Additional Qualifications and Skills
- Experience working on issues related to nutrition and/or research is an added advantage
- Experience working in informal settlements is an added advantage
Period of Engagement
The candidate will be offered an initial one year contract to be renewed based on their performance on the job and their individual progress with their Masters studies.
