Project Summary: AVSI is implementing in Torit County a project called “Improve Child Friendly Schools in Torit County through community development and girls’ education” aimed to improve high quality education of 3,708 children (44% girls) in 6 primary schools in Torit County, Eastern Equatoria State, South Sudan. Beneficiaries of the project are girls and boys children in selected communities and primary schools, with particular focus on children with disabilities and children from poor families. Since Torit County is one of the principal destinations for returnees, children among the IDPs and returnee populations will also be targeted to ensure their integration into the education system.
Job Title: Protection Officer - Torit South Sudan
Main Duty: The Protection Officer is responsible for implementing activities in 6 selected Child Friendly schools. Such activities will mainly focus on Child rights and child protection. The Protection Officer will work hand in hand with the Education Officer in Torit and he will report to the Field Officer and the Project Manager.
Specific duties:
• To mobilize community members and parents on the importance of education, especially for girls
• Maintain good relationship and work closely with local authorities (Boma, Payam, County and State level)
• Mapping out of school children
• Mobilizing PTAs in order to create talking schools compound
• Mobilize community members for building teachers’ houses
• Prepare monthly internal work plan activities
• Collaborate also with other AVSI departments (health and wash) for an harmonization of the activities in the targeted schools
• Support the formation of child-led groups in the 6 schools
• Provide capacity building to school staff on child participation approaches
• Train PTAs on child needs and rights
• Support regular children’s club meetings and awareness campaigns
• Be responsible for empowering female teachers who will in turn support and promote girl child education
• Supporting in the creation of Child Friendly Committee in 2 selected primary schools
• Assist in identifying priorities for future support programs for schools in the project area
• To maintain a mentoring record for each teacher and compile regular reports for the benefit of AVSI Education staff on school and teacher activities, progress, and challenges
• Be available for overnight stays outside Torit for monitoring schools situation
Duty Station: Torit, Torit County. The Protection Officer will be working extensively in rural targeted communities including extended overnight field visits.
Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor in Child Protection
• Diploma in primary education
• Prior experience in tutoring/carrying out teachers training
• Experience working with and mobilizing communities at grass root level
• Experience in working with schools/education sector
• Good working knowledge of communities within Torit County (to reside in Torit and surrounding areas is a plus)
• Good knowledge of the English language – spoken and written
• Fluency in Juba Arabic and any other local languages spoken in the assigned locations
• Good computer skills (Microsoft Word & Excel)
• Good reporting system skills
• Excellent interpersonal, problem solving and diplomatic skills
• Knowledge and exposure to Southern Sudan education sector
• South Sudanese nationality is a plus

• Professional development in child rights/protection
• Experience in community mobilization
• Proven support supervision skills
• Availability to work extensively in the rural areas
