Radio Programme Trainer/Coach, North and South Sudan

IWPR is seeking an experienced journalist and radio producer with training and coaching abilities. The candidate will have experience in coaching teams in the production of magazine-style programmes on women rights-related issues. S/he will have both the technical know-how and leadership skills to get a new radio programme off the ground. The candidate will be from Sudan and speak fluent Arabic and English in addition to other local languages, and will be willing to travel to South Sudan and to be based in Wau for three-months starting April 2012.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The overall aim of this cross-border radio project, Raising, Connecting and Strengthening Women’s Voices, is to enhance the role and involvement of women from various marginalized communities in raising fundamental rights issues at local, regional and national level. The more specific objectives of this project are to empower a small women’s network through training in radio reporting skills and outreach strategies, and to provide beneficiaries with access to independent news on the rule of law and women’s rights in order to stimulate debate in the targeted areas.
IWPR, in cooperation with Sudan Catholic Radio Network and Sudanese Women for Empowerment (SUWEP), will train seven female women journalists to become professional radio reporters and producers; produce and broadcast 58 weekly 15-minute radio programmes focusing on basic rights to a potential audience of several million residents of the areas of Western Bahr el-Ghazal and Upper Nile states (South Sudan) and the Nuba Mountains (Kordofan, North Sudan); and train local women's organizations how to work effectively with the media to stimulate discussion and to fulfill their advocacy goals.
JOB DESCRIPTION
During the first three months of the project the consultant trainer/coach will set up the project and conduct a training workshop for a select group of seven female women reporters, followed by ongoing coaching, as part of the production process, to a core production team consisting of one local producer and two programme-makers in Wau (Western Bahr al-Ghazal). The goal for them is to acquire the skills and techniques they need to produce high-quality radio programmes that meet IWPR journalism standards. Following the training, the trainer/coach will continue to monitor the production process and provide quality control remotely for the remaining period of the project.The consultant will work towards a total production target of 58 episodes during the 15-month project period.
SPECIFIC DUTIES
to recruit reporters and a local producer; to conduct a ten-day training workshop on site for seven female women reporters and monitor and evaluate their work progress; to coach one local producer and two local programme-makers and reporters in the production of the new radio programmes, over a three-month period on site in Wau; in coordination with the local producer, reporters and broadcast editor, to produce and broadcast 58 episodes during the 15 month project period; to conduct a three-day workshop in outreach and media strategies for 6 SuWEP members; to work closely with local partners.
