ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:
Build Change (www.buildchange.org) is an international non-profit social enterprise that designs earthquake-resistant houses in developing countries and trains builders, homeowners, engineers and government officials to build them. Build Change’s designs are affordable, culturally appropriate, and use materials and techniques that will continue to be used after our intervention is finished. Build Change works with the public and private sector to leave in place long-term change in construction practice. Build Change operates in Indonesia, China and Haiti. So far, Build Change has improved the design and/or construction of over 18,000 houses worldwide and trained 12,000 people.
Build Change is a US-based 501(c)3 non-profit social enterprise in operation since 2004. Build Change has won grants from Echoing Green, Draper Richards Foundation, Mulago Foundation and Ashoka-Lemelson and was named a 2008 Laureate in the Equality Category for Technology Benefiting Humanity by the San Jose Tech Museum of Innovation Tech Awards. Recently, Build Change’s founder won the 2011 Lemelson-MIT Award for Sustainability and was named a US Social Entrepreneur of the Year by the Schwab Foundation. Build Change’s work has been featured on abcNEWS World News Tonight, BBC Website, National Public Radio All Things Considered, the New York Times, ELLE Magazine and Bloomberg BusinessWeek.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
For the position of Fund Development Officer, Build Change is seeking an experienced, innovative, outgoing individual with a proven track record of raising funds and building brand recognition for an international non-profit social enterprise. The successful candidate should have documented success in writing grants and writing and winning technical, detailed proposals for donors such as USAID, American Red Cross and others. Proposal writing experience in the engineering and construction industry is a plus.
FUND DEVELOPMENT FUNCTIONS
• Provide CEO with qualified donor leads, arrange meetings, cultivate relationships and ensure
follow-up • Do grant and award research and produce high quality grant and award proposals • Research corporate partnership opportunities and enroll Build Change in employee matching giving programs • Prepare and submit fund development pipeline reports to CEO and Board of Directors • Lead on the development and updating of Salesforce, Constant Contact, and other donor databases and marketing tools • Implement on-line fundraising campaigns, maintain Build Change presence on giving websites, and manage on-line donations • Implement direct donation through Build Change website and text messaging • Work closely with finance staff to ensure accurate reporting of financial contributions • Process gifts, maintain contact databases, maintain development collateral inventory, manage relationships with printers and vendors, and update website
PR and MARKETING FUNCTIONS
• Work in partnership with Build Change’s Haiti-based PR and outreach director to develop and implement an integrated PR and marketing plan to advance Build Change’s brand identity; broaden awareness of its programs and priorities; and increase the visibility of its programs across key stakeholder audiences • Improve Build Change print communications including the annual report, marketing collateral materials and electronic communications including Build Change’s website, donation websites, newsletters, and new media; manage relationships with associated vendors • Screen media opportunities and work with CEO on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization; prepare talking points, speeches, presentations and other supporting material • Actively engage, cultivate and manage press relationships to ensure coverage surrounding Build Change programs, earthquakes and earthquake anniversaries, special events, public announcements, and other projects
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum 5 years professional experience in proposal writing for an international non-profit social enterprise or similar private sector business, with proven record of winning grants and contracts
and exceeding fundraising or business development goals • Bachelor’s degree, top-performing educational background preferably from a leading school • Outstanding, outgoing interpersonal skills, high energy level, and ability to speak persuasively in front of large and small groups • Competency with social media, donor data management systems and e-newsletters (such as Salesforce, Constant Contact, giving websites) • Management and task execution skillset that includes ownership over milestones, workplans, fund development targets, reporting and proficiency with MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and desktop publishing • Superior, professional writing, presentation, and communication skills • Ability to work independently, willingness to work evenings and weekends and travel domestically and to Indonesia, China, and Haiti • Knowledge of and passion for Build Change’s mission; engineering, construction, or architecture experience is helpful but not required • No ego, drama, or pessimism; the successful candidate will be flexible, humble, patient, and have a good sense of humor • Ability to speak Mandarin Chinese, Bahasa Indonesia and/or French is helpful but not required
