EMPLOYEE RELATIONS MANAGER
African Barrick Gold’s Dar es Salaam Office seeks to employ an experienced Employee Relations Manager to provide a comprehensive and effective Employee Relations and Communications service to African Barrick Gold.
The position will be based in Dar es Salaam with travel to the various mine sites and ABG offices and the incumbent will report to the Director Human Resources.
KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Employee Relations policies and procedures
• Directs the development of an Employee Relations Strategy to enable effective implementation and maintenance of the IR philosophy by:
evaluating strategic decisions, and making recommendations to the SLT;
analysing Employee Relations and Communications trends;
advising and providing expert guidance to management regarding Employee Relations strategies;
formulating policies and procedures relating to Employee Relations issues to achieve set objectives;
• Auditing Company policies and procedures, collective labour agreements and Employee Relations structures to ensure compliance with relevant legislation and compatibility with the Company Employee Relations philosophy.
2. Employee Relations consultation and Union relations
• Facilitates negotiations between the Company and the Union by:
consulting with Union representatives regarding various initiatives and issues, e.g. privatisation, changes to work practices;
managing disputes;
advising management on negotiation strategies;
representing the interests of the Company at Central substantive negotiations;
• Monitoring the application of Union/Management agreements and taking remedial action as appropriate.
3. Internal Employee Relations climate
• Monitors the Employee Relations climate by:
assessing the implications of new trends and developments, recommending appropriate changes to management and facilitating the implementation of approved changes;
• Identifying and anticipating areas of potential conflict and developing appropriate strategies to counteract undesirable trends and avoid production losses resulting from Employee action, labour disputes and legal action.
• Collates a monthly report on Employee Relations-related issues for the Human Resources Director, evaluating and following up on issues arising from the report content.
4. Employee motivation
• Directs the development and implementation of employee motivational schemes in order to reward and encourage the pursuit of excellence in the workplace.
5. Support services to site Management
• Assist site Management in order to achieve operational objectives in relation to employee relations by:
preparing annual objectives for Employee Relations, submitting them to site Management and the Human Resources Director for approval;
Facilitates (in collaboration with other Company functional areas and management) the development and implementation of an updated localisation plan.
6. Cost control
• Co-ordinates and submits the annual Employee Relations budget for approval.
PROFESSIONAL AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS/ATTRIBUTES
Education Requirements:
• Honours Degree/Professional qualification including Employee Relations and Labour Law
Experience Requirements:
• 8 Years Employee Relations experience of which 3 years must be at middle management level.
• The ability to carry out processes that require a command of highly specialised technical and basic research skills across disciplines, involve a range of procedures, and apply in complex, variable and specialised contexts.
