Researcher Crop Modelling
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is looking for a highly qualified Researcher Crop Modelling to join its Sustainable Productivity Enhancement Program. The Researcher will be stationed in Cotonou, Benin.
About AfricaRice:
The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) is an association of 24 African member states and one of the 15 international Centers supported by the Consortium of International Agricultural Research Centers (CGIAR). The Center’s mission is to contribute to poverty alleviation and food security in Africa, through research, development and partnership activities aimed at increasing the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in ways that ensure the sustainability of the farming environment.
Responsibilities:
- Under the supervision of the program leader, the Researcher will:
- Adapt, apply and validate crop models to assess spatial variation in potential yield, and yield gap between actual and potential yield in rice production systems in Africa;
- Analyse the impact of climate change (drought, temperatures changes) on rice production;
- Contribute to the spatial analysis that aims to identify Target Population Environments for rice varieties and explain the bio-physical reasons for yield gaps;
- Test management options that support farmer’s decisions under limited resources availability at farm level through crop modelling.
- Contribute to development of protocols for collecting data at field level (plant, soil, water and weather information) that are required for crop modelling;
- Publish and communicate research results in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, general interest outlets, and the media;
- Lead the crop modelling activities at AfricaRice and mobilise funds; and
- Support and contribute to training of MSc and PhD students and supervise support staff
Essential Requirements: The successful candidate should have:
- A Ph.D. degree in Plant Production, Crop Modelling or a relevant subject;
- Minimal five years of relevant work experience, preferably in Africa;
- Experience in the application and validation of crop growth models like CERES-Rice, ORYZA2000, WOFOST, EPIC, DSSAT, etc.;
- Strong programming skills in C++, Fortran;
- Communication skills in either English or French.
Desirable requirements:
- Experience in the integration of remote sensing derived data (such as crop phenology or Leaf Area Index) in crop modelling.
- Experience in the use of GIS software like ArcGIS;
- Scientific publication record;
- Knowledge of rice production systems in Africa.
