The U.S. Embassy in Pretoria is seeking an individual for the position of Public Health Specialist (Biomedical Prevention) in the Office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Qualifications Required: NOTE: ALL APPLICANTS MUST ADDRESS EACH SELECTION CRITERION DETAILED BELOW WITH SPECIFIC AND COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION SUPPORTING EACH ITEM. Items 1- 8 ALL REQUIRED 1. Master’s degree in Public Health, Medical Sciences, Social Science, Nursing or related field. 2. A minimum of five years work experience in HIV or public health activities with some exposure to populations at high risk for HIV. 3. English level IV (fluent) writing/reading/speaking. (This will be tested). 4. Comprehensive knowledge and experience in HIV/AIDS biomedical prevention strategies including counseling and testing, medical male circumcision, microbicides, vaccine development, and other biomedical approaches to HIV prevention. 5. Specialized knowledge of monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems for health programs with prior work experience in one or more of the following: (1) design and/or management of health information systems (HIS), (2) creation and/or utilization of surveys, patient registers and other health data/surveillance tools, (3) development and clearance of study protocols, including completion of institutional review board (IRB), human subjects, and other clearance processes. 6. Familiarity with South African Government (SAG) structure and experience working directly with SAG officials and program managers. 7. Ability to plan, organize and direct multi-disciplinary project teams and activities and overall administrative requirements, budgeting and fiscal management in support of grants, contracts, cooperative agreements, and purchase requisitions. 8. Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite 2007. (Basic Word and Basic Excel – This will be tested). |
Job Specification
Basic Function of Position: Basic Function of Position:The Biomedical Prevention Specialist works under the direction of the Biomedical Prevention Team Lead as a key public health advisor to the Biomedical Prevention Team Lead, Prevention Branch and CDC management. The position serves as the primary CDC contact for assigned implementing partners for issues related to CDC supported prevention program activities and provides intensive technical support to the South African National Department of Health (NDOH). The position also includes day-to-day program and administrative management, and coordination and collaboration with other President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS (PEPFAR) agencies.
