This Consultancy offers an exciting opportunity to build on previous work and continue strengthening the capacity of Abu Musa Al Ashary Charitable Association and the National AIDS Programme in Al-Hodeida to respond effectively to HIV and AIDS in Yemen where current prevalence rates are low, but levels of awareness at the local and national level are also very low. The Consultant will assist both entities in developing interventions mainly with local civil society groups in Al-Hodeida, as well as feeding experiences into a national response to HIV and AIDS in Yemen through the provision of training and capacity building support in organisational development and advocacy, and assisting them to coordinate and network with a range of stakeholders.
The successful candidate should have a degree in social sciences and/or public health qualification or training and inter-disciplinary knowledge of the management and control of HIV and AIDS (social/cultural, public health, advocacy).
A minimum of three years’ experience in HIV and AIDS programmes in a policy, management or design capacity at community and national levels is essential. As well as experience of effective strategies to respond to HIV and AIDS working with religious leaders; in planning and facilitating training events on HIV and AIDS; of working with governmental and non-governmental organisations, people living with HIV, and in the formation of support groups. Experience of training others in home based care and of working in a resource poor environment are also essential
You should have an uunderstanding of capacity building techniques and methods; of the implications of gender when working with issues relating to HIV and AIDS; cultural sensitivity; the ability and willingness to transfer skills through formal and informal training; strong planning and analytical skills; good interpersonal and communication skills, including good report writing skills in English, and the ability to adapt skills and knowledge to local context and work with existing resources.
Commitment to participatory/consultative methods; an understanding of the importance of advocacy in addressing HIV and AIDS issues; ability/willingness to be self-servicing; willingness to undertake road travel in Yemen, and the right to work in Yemen are also essential.
