Faculty of Arts
The University of Helsinki is among the leading multidisciplinary research universities in the world. In addition to its 11 faculties, the University includes several independent institutes, some of which are jointly operated with other universities. Some 36,000 students are currently pursuing an undergraduate or postgraduate degree at the University of Helsinki.
The Faculty of Arts is Finland’s oldest institution for teaching and research in the humanities and the largest in terms of the structure and range of disciplines. It is also a significant international community fostering research, education and cultural interaction.
The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies (http://www.helsinki.fi/phca/) belongs to the Faculty of Arts and has a strong profile in the multidisciplinary research and teaching of the humanities.
Ethnology/European ethnology is taught within the Department’s cultural heritage programme, which also includes the disciplines of folklore, art history and archaeology as well as the minor subject of museology. This group of disciplines will involve an assistant professorship (tenure track) in cultural heritage to serve the entire department. Ethnology/European ethnology per se is an internationally active research area which focuses on the material culture and cultural heritage. It documents and studies everyday life from both local as well as broader and multicultural perspectives, from the point of view of the present as well as the past. Connecting the local and global is important for the understanding of cultures, including one’s own culture. Of equal importance is the parallel investigation of the material and immaterial heritage.
The Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies, University of Helsinki, invites applications for the position of
