Akilah is a college for young women in Kigali, Rwanda. Akilah is creating a new model of education for young women in Rwanda by providing training that is a direct response to the needs of the business community. Our first 2-year Diploma in Hospitality Management prepares young women to find meaningful employment and launch ventures in the fastest growing sector of the Rwandan economy. We are developing a new Degree in Business Management & Entrepreneurship.
We are currently located in the capital of Kigali but we will relocate to Bugesera district after we have finished renovating our new campus (see www.AkilahInstitute.org/campus for more information). We are growing to a student population of 1,000 students.
Position: Hospitality Management Director
This is a full-time teaching and management position starting January 3, 2011.
We are seeking an individual with proven classroom instruction experience with young adults, as well as 7-10 years of experience in the global hospitality and/or tourism industry.
The Director serves both as a faculty member and director, to include preparing and delivering relevant and current course material in an understandable and motivating fashion, and directing and managing the operation of the diploma program.
Responsibilities:
- Measure students understanding of course content in an objective fashion utilizing outcome and assessment modules.
- Maintains accurate records of student attendance, academic achievement, and performance in accordance with the institutes policies and procedures.
- Distribute to each student, in each course, an institute approved syllabus that includes course objectives, texts, attendance policy and materials required for course and evaluation criteria.
- Directly responsible for training, observing and supervising the Hospitality Management instructors reviewing all syllabi, lesson plans and assessment methods used by the instructors.
- Attend all faculty meetings, department meetings, faculty orientation, training programs, and committee meetings of which they are members. Support extracurricular activities as an advisor.
- Work closely with Rwandan private sector and Advisory Board to ensure that curriculum is a direct response to the needs of the workforce.
- Oversee internship program to ensure that all students complete 240 hours of required internship
- incorporate feedback from supervisors into the Diploma program.
The ideal candidate will have proven experience in developing or leading academic programs within a collaborative environment, show ability to multi task and communicates his/her approach clearly to the Executive Director and academic team.Candidate will have a mission-focused approach to the design and implementation of the Akilah Institute Hospitality Management program and understands Rwanda’s history and future goals.
Criteria:
- Deeply passionate about preparing young women to become leaders and entrepreneurs in the burgeoning hospitality industry.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Extensive experience in the global hospitality/tourism industry.
- English fluency.
- Passion for womens education and building a new academic program in a start-up environment.
- Energetic and positive attitude.
- Willingness to commit to a minimum of 2 years.
