Agricultural Economist
We are currently seeking an Agricultural Economist to contribute research and writing expertise to a USAID-funded market mechanisms study in Zimbabwe. Specifically, the Agricultural Economist will work as part of small team to collect, analyze and present current information on the agricultural sector, providing insight into how the economic environment affects food insecurity. The position requires an analysis of market mechanisms, including the roles of various types of traders and market institutions, examining the scope, scale, effectiveness and constraints. The assignment will consist of an estimated six weeks beginning October 2011 with work completed both in Zimbabwe and remotely. The position is contingent upon ACDI/VOCA being awarded the task order.
Responsibilities: • Contribute to the economic research and writing of the assessment • Provide recommendations on changes to market mechanisms that contribute to food insecurity • Utilize information provided by in-office and field-based research • Outline recommendations for improved policies, practices and new initiatives to increase food security • Conduct a Bellmon Analysis as part of the economic research on target commodities and/or value chains
Qualifications: • 8-10 years of experience in completing agricultural economic research and reporting • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, business administration or a related field required • Demonstrated experience conducting Bellmon Analyses in support of food security programs • Proven understanding of USAID value chain development techniques and approaches • Experience working in Southern Africa • Ability to work on a team, under tight deadlines • Strong writing and communication skills required • Fluent in English, written and spoken
