The Center for International Forestry Research advances human wellbeing, environmental conservation and equity by conducting research to inform policies and practices that affect forests in developing countries. We are one of 15 centres within the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our headquarters are in Bogor, Indonesia, and we have offices in Asia, Africa and South America.
CIFOR is looking for a CIFOR Representative for its Eastern and Southern Africa Region
The CIFOR Representative in Eastern and Southern Africa will facilitate the efficient and effective implementation of CIFOR’s global programme at the regional level. The Representative will work closely with the research division, our technical and administrative support divisions and their counterparts at other CGIAR centres and partner organisations to ensure integration and coordination of all collaborative activities in the region.
The Representative will take the lead in developing and maintaining the Center’s relationships with donors, partners and other stakeholders in the region. The Representative will help mobilise financial resources from Africa-specific funding sources, in coordination with staff based at headquarters and elsewhere in Africa.
Principal accountabilities
Strategic issues
Coordinate and oversee implementation of our strategy in ESA
Provide strategic advice to other directors and research leaders on opportunities and risks specific to the region
Support directors and research leaders to develop compelling research proposals, identify the human and financial resources needed to deliver the identified research outcomes and establish the partnerships needed to deliver ultimate impacts
Representation
Maintain and further develop high-level relationships with a diversity of partners and stakeholders, including national governments, multilateral and regional organisations, donor agencies, nongovernmental organisations, research institutes and other partners and stakeholders in the region
Provide support to the coordination and collaboration with other CGIAR centres working in Africa, and in particular, with the World Agroforestry Centre under the rubric of the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees and Agroforestry
In collaboration with the Information Services Group, ensure that CIFOR communications are effectively conveyed to target audiences in the region
Resource mobilisation
Lead in identifying and pursuing growth opportunities for CIFOR within the region
Contribute to the development of proposals in coordination with relevant staff in the research programmes and the Information Services Group
Management
Supervise the operations of CIFOR’s office for the Eastern and Southern Africa region in coordination with directors of other support units
With authority delegated from programme directors and in coordination with research leaders, supervise outposted researchers and support them in pursuing strategic priorities at the country and regional levels, strengthen their fund-raising efforts and ensure that projects are managed effectively to produce specified outcomes, within budget and timeframes
Foster teamwork and resolve conflicts constructively
Requirements
Education, experience and technical skills
PhD in a relevant discipline with at least 10 years of relevant experience, including research management experience in an international, multicultural and multidisciplinary environment
Expertise in the current state of knowledge, policy, and practice of the forestry research especially in Eastern and Southern Africa
Expertise in the international processes related to forests
Proven fund-raising record
Fluency in English is required; proficiency in other international languages is preferred.
Personal attributes and competencies
Has strong leadership skills, able to engage in strategic planning with sound analytical ability and good judgement
Is an astute manager, able to manage human resources and administrative matters tactfully, with efficiency and effectiveness
Havs excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to interact constructively with people across different cultures, disciplines and institutions.
Terms and conditions
CIFOR offers a competitive remuneration in USD commensurate with skills and experience.
The appointment will be for a period of 3 years with a possibility of extension contingent upon performance, continued relevance of the position and available resources.
The duty station will be in Nairobi, Kenya.
