Background
Saferworld has an established programme of work in South Sudan, and has done some preliminary work in the South Kordofan region, mainly supporting a local civil society organisation, in a number of peacebuilding programmes. The intention is to build up over time a longer-term relationship with CSOs in South Kordofan and the broader North-South border region, and to work with them and other stakeholders on broader community security and peacebuilding.
Following events in May and June, with Abyei and South Kordofan sliding into conflict, Saferworld has developed a responsive advocacy role, ensuring that the events unfolding on the ground were on the agenda of policymakers in the UK, Juba and elsewhere, as well as the international media. This assignment is designed to assist this task.
Purpose of assignment
This assignment is designed to assist Saferworld’s international policy and advocacy work in response to the current crisis in South Kordofan, and also to support the development of internal options and directions for Saferworld to engage in the North-South border areas more broadly.
The work will be undertaken in close collaboration with Saferworld staff in London, Kampala and Juba and will include:
1. Producing a brief overview of the key issues relating to the peaceful management of the international North-South border and current international response gaps
2. Supporting SW’s current advocacy and policy response to the crisis and link with the emerging network that have emerged around South Kordofan
3. Gathering real-time information about the situation on the ground through traveling to Juba and/or Khartoum (if possible) and telephonically
4. Identifying further opportunities for Saferworld in the border areas and/or broader North Sudan
The consultancy will take place over 30 working days (6 weeks) which within limits, do not need to be consecutive and will include at least 2 weeks in the region and a debrief with the head of regional programme in Kampala.
