About the role
Developing and coordinating communications strategies for a global audience, you’ll have a huge impact on how we communicate and contribute to the objectives of our new global Security with Human Rights Campaign. You’ll seize every opportunity to further our campaign aims in the media, advising us on how best to reach our target audiences. And critically, you’ll employ a creative and tactical approach, making the most of both traditional and innovative communications to engage with new and existing audiences. You’ll also effectively engage a variety of stakeholders, internally and in the media, motivating and inspiring them. You’ll liaise with departments across International Secretariat and globally, taking a collaborative approach to your work and influencing your colleagues to drive progress on the projects you’re overseeing.
About you
You’ll have a solid background in developing and coordinating international communications strategies, with experience of internet campaigning and a proven ability to engage everyone from activists and new audiences to colleagues and external stakeholders. And whatever part of the industry you join us from, you’ll have an understanding of human rights, the principles of campaigning and the political issues surrounding the campaign. Key to your success will be your ability to communicate clearly and confidently – evident in both your strong influencing and interpersonal skills, and the compelling copy you’ll write for a range of audiences.
JOB PURPOSE: Working with colleagues across the International Secretariat and throughout Amnesty International globally, you will be responsible for developing and implementing a communications strategy on a major global campaign issue, Security and Human Rights.

Amnesty International’s new global campaign on human rights abuses in the context of terrorism, counter terrorism and ‘national security’ builds on the organisation’s previous Counter Terror with Justice (CTWJ) Campaign, and broadens in scope to address abuses in all five world regions. The ‘Security & Human Rights’ Campaign (working title) will initially prioritise a flagship project on ending unlawful and abusive detentions in the name of ‘national security’ as well as developing the organisation’s campaigning on behalf of victims of terrorism and armed groups.
The post-holder, along with colleagues in the Campaign team and other programmes, will be responsible for developing and implementing an overarching communications strategy for the global Campaign, including devising innovative campaign communications to target new audiences in the Global South. During the developmental phase of the new Campaign, the post-holder will ensure an effective consultation process on communications methods and strategy is developed and conducted involving key stakeholders across the Amnesty International movement, and lead on coordinating the development of the branding and identity for the Campaign.
DEPARTMENT PURPOSE: To develop, coordinate, programme and lead on delivery of Amnesty International’s global campaigns; to coordinate and deliver campaign work on behalf of individuals at risk; to increase campaign effectiveness across the International Secretariat and the Amnesty International movement.
As a communications strategist: Proven experience of developing and coordinating implementation of global communications strategies in international and regional contexts to meet specific objectives. Demonstrated understanding of the role of different communication approaches, models and tools to advance campaign objectives for diverse audiences.
Communications skills and experience: Proven experience in similar role in international environment. Ability to present key messages in a clear and dynamic way. Substantial experience of writing clear and concise materials to tight deadlines. Proven ability to design and draft speeches, briefings, press releases and activist materials for a range of audiences.
Project development and implementation: Ability to build and develop projects involving teams and bringing people together from different departments; Proven ability in the project management of communications strategies including conceptual development, market research and testing, monitoring and evaluation. Experience in producing or overseeing production of range of materials for print, broadcast and online media.
Experience and understanding of campaigning and activism: Experience of working with an activist campaigning organization. Understanding of the role of communications in campaigning. Understanding of the needs of an activist audience.
Creative Thinking: Experience of developing innovative methods to reach new audiences or traditional audiences in new ways.
Effective coordination and work organisation skills: Ability to coordinate a project team to develop and deliver specific communications strategies. Experience of setting clear work goals and monitoring progress, managing conflicting demands, meeting deadlines and adjusting priorities; Experience of efficiently coordinating flow of communications and information; Willingness to undertake personal administrative tasks.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills: Experience communicating organisational positions and views to external stakeholders. Ability and willingness to motivate others and give effective feedback. Experience of establishing good working relationships with colleagues from a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Knowledge of and commitment to the issue and human rights: Good understanding of human rights, particularly related to the issues covered by the campaign. Understanding of cultural diversity and equal opportunities and willingness to apply in work Awareness of issues of social justice equality and fairness. Understanding of the work within Amnesty’s mission
Use of political judgment: Able to identify the necessary information, ethical and strategic factors to be taken into account, potentially influential actors, alternative courses of action and pros and cons of actions before making a decision.
Communications technology: Knowledge and experience of the use of IT and the internet in a campaigning environment; Experience producing and editing content for the web, including audio-visual and non-text base materials.
Language: Fluent in written and spoken English. Working knowledge of other languages including Arabic, French or Spanish is highly desirable

Develop communications strategies for the Campaign:
- Project manage the development, testing and agreement of communications strategies for the campaign including key messages, objectives, target audiences and indicators for success, that contribute to the delivery of the Campaign’s objectives.
- Lead on the development of a robust identity for the campaign, with resonance around the world.
- Coordinate the implementation of campaign communications with a cross-programme team; develop and coordinate projects necessary for the campaign’s preparation and delivery including for the production of agreed communication products and materials to ensure high quality messaging to reach agreed target audiences
- Identify, coordinate and organize for high quality delivery of the Campaign’s reactive and proactive media activities and web content, responding to daily media queries, working with the press office to plan, pitch and place stories and interviews; ensuring Amnesty International’s spokespeople are identified, deployed and briefed appropriately and to best effect
- Provide expert advice on the communications dimension of the campaign including on how the issue is portrayed in the media and ensuring campaign materials and communications reflect the ethical standards of the campaign and Amnesty International and that - as appropriate - the voices of those on whose behalf we work are highlighted.
- Identify relevant training needs and contribute to capacity building work
- Identify, advise on and exploit opportunities to further the aims of the campaign through communications initiatives through monitoring and analysing the coverage of the campaign and related issues and identifying key opinion leaders and commentators to engage
Deliver high quality communications materials in support of the campaigns objectives:
- prepare and write communications materials for a variety of platforms and audiences including press releases, editorials, feature and opinion pieces, activist bulletins, speeches and presentations
- Ensure the production of key communications materials including major publications and audio-visual output with relevant programmes;
- Develop and coordinate the content of the campaign’s internet presence
- Represent the campaign to media through preparing briefings and as a spokesperson and responding to queries from media and other organisations
- Support the work of Amnesty International national sections and partner organisations in their campaign communications and, with other members of the campaign team, facilitate information sharing, good practices and debate across the movement to further the implementation of the Campaign’s objectives.
Support the work of the Campaign team, Campaigns Programme and International Secretariat:
- Participate in cross-programme or intra-programme teams as agreed and to undertake project work, as delegated. Cover for the absence of colleagues when appropriate. Undertake own administrative tasks and undergo training as necessary for the performance of the job.
